Although this year looks different than usual, we still have ways for you to get involved and support your kids’ school. We want you to know that ALL Ross Road parents are members of the PAC by having a child at Ross Road School. Each of you play a vital role in making Ross Road a great place for our kids to grow and learn.

Did you know what the PAC funds do in our school?

So many of the things your children enjoy that enhance their learning – For example laptop computers, I-pads, arts performances, Bike To School Week activities, new furniture for the library, books for the library, math games, balls for games at recess and lunch, and new yoga mats for the gym – all these items are funded by the PAC to benefit the school.

PAC NEWSLETTER – MAY 26, 2017

b2sw

It has been a busy two weeks with a long weekend in between. I hope everyone enjoyed the sun this past long weekend. It also looks like the sun has decided to stay which makes everyone happy.

A few things to mention in this newsletter;

Ross Road Bike To School Week 2017 is next week, May 29th through June 2nd.  Please prep your bikes and plan your routes to school!  Active transportation is encouraged throughout the week so if biking is not an option for you consider walking to school with your kids, skateboarding, scooting, or even driving part way and biking or walking the rest. For more information on what events will be taking place at the school please click here.

The PAC Annual General Meeting is next Wednesday, May 31st, in the school library at 7.00pm. The last RRPAC GM Feb 2017 are posted on the PAC website, click here to review and approve at the AGM. We have also posted on the website the Ross Road 2017 wish list that we will be looking to approve at the AGM. The agenda and upcoming budget will be posted as soon as possible. As always childcare will be available if required. Please email the PAC if it is needed.

The Spring CarnivalJune 9th We’ve chosen a theme and it’s YELLOW and GREEN at the Spring Carnival! Let your spring colours shine by dressing up in LEMON or LIME on June 9th.

Thanks again for your cash donations. We are now looking for a few items that won’t affect your pocketbook. If you have a pop-up tent, a cooler or a full propane tank you can lend us on the day of the Carnival, please contact Betty at betty.tang@vch.ca or 778-668-8447.  Also, if you are interested in sponsoring an activity, or running a special table, please send Susan a note at skneale17@gmail.com. Your support is appreciated!

Screenagers – The Ross Road PAC is pleased to invite you to a special screening of Screenagers – Growing up in the Digital Age on Monday June 12th at 7 PM in the library or gym (depending on how many people will attend). All students in grade 6 and 7 will be watching this film on Tuesday June 13th.

There is no charge to attend the movie but please RSVP – https://impactflow.com/event/3114/checkout/tickets by Friday June 9th so that we know how many people to expect and whether to set up in the library or the gym. More information can be found on Screenagers here.

New Ross Road Class

As many of you may have heard, Ross Road will be getting an additional class/division in September as a result of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling around class size and composition, http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bctf-wins-supreme-court-battle-over-class-size-and-composition-1.3845620,  While many parents are excited about the decision, there are concerns regarding how this will impact our school. The North Van School District has already had a site visit and are leaning towards creating classroom space by re-purposing a portion of our library, i.e. 80 sq metres out of 236 sq metres. No final decisions have been made, however we know Ross Road is not alone in this – several other elementary schools are experiencing similar effects.

What can we do, you ask? Here are a few suggestions. Our AGM next week will include this on agenda.

  1. Sign petition – http://www.thepetitionsite.com/304/212/385/protect-ross-road-elementary-library-and-other-critical-learning-spaces/
  2. Write a independent letter (template below)

Send to:

Letter template

  • Identify concern – that schools are having to sacrifice important spaces (like libraries and music rooms) to accommodate additional classrooms as a result of the supreme court decision on classroom size and composition.
  • Describe impact – repurposed library space, no community space, maximized building capacity, etc
  • Reference Supreme Court ruling and confirm community support for the ruling
  • Argue need for proper implementation of court ruling, including the need for funding infrastructure
  • Offer solution – district to fund additional portable for Ross Road

Have a great week.

Friday Newsletter: There’s lots going on!

Dear parents,

  • Don’t forget there is early dismissal (at 1.50pm) next Wednesday.  Want to keep up to date on all the official school events like this?  Click here to be taken to the Ross Road school calendar.
  • Next week is Bike to School week!  Bushnell Place will be closed at Ross Road, and there will be no valet!    K to Grade 5 will be doing their thing on Monday, so don’t forget a bike and helmet.  Grade 6 & 7 trail rides are on Tuesday.  For your child to participate in these rides, you must have signed and returned the waivers and consent forms.  And they’ll obviously  need a bike and helmet too :)  There’s lots of other things happening as well.  Check out the email that was sent to all classes earlier this week for complete information.
  • We still need volunteers for various PAC positions…..like a valet coordinator.  If you use the valet system, please consider volunteering for this very important job.  (No coordinator means no valet).  We also need someone to co-chair the PAC with Sarah Dennis.  If you’re interested in either position…or something else, please let Sarah know.
  • A big thank you to retiring members of the PAC executive….like Julie Dunsterville (co-chair) and Gillian Gorton (Environment Club).  And as always, a big thank you to all volunteers on the PAC executive and within the PAC itself.
  • Don’t forget the Spring Fair is on Friday June 20.  Mark your calendars!
  • In fundraising news, the KM club raised $147 and the Jump Rope for Heart raised over $8000! (of which 10% came back to the school to buy fitness equipment!)  Nice work!

Enjoy your weekend!
