Friday Newsletter: Spring Fair cancelled | End of year picnic?

Dear parents,

Unfortunately, the PAC has had to make the tough decision to cancel the Spring Fair.  Even though there still is a chance that the strike may be averted, the uncertainty around it means that we can’t continue to plan the event, book outside vendors or generally prepare without the certainty of knowing it will definitely go ahead.  Please know that the PAC hasn’t taken this decision lightly, and many parents have been working hard to try to avoid this outcome.

A BIG thank you to the the members of the Spring Fair Committee, who’ve put in countless hours of preparation and planning for the Fair.  Thank you to all of them for doing this.  We’re hoping it won’t all be in vain, and there will be a chance in the next school year to still hold a big event.

Even though the Fair has been cancelled, there has been a suggestion that we still get together for an end-of-year event for the school community….a BYO picnic next Friday in Princess Park.  Could you please answer the simple poll below, so we can gauge if there’s enough interest to go ahead and book the park.

Two weeks from now on Friday, June 20, 2014, the fun under the big-top begins! At this point everyone knows that the 2014 Spring Carnival has been carefully planned and that our school is going to stage a night to remember, but here are some more details on the evening’s events you won’t want to miss.

  • Dunk Tank. Only the bravest grade 7s will dare to take a ride on the dunk tank. See if you can get away without getting wet.
  • Booths. More returning booths to look forward to … fun activities for the whole family such as RCMP speed radar, Escape Bikes Adventure, Cinemazoo and Kick and Score soccer. Make sure to bring your own bike and helmet to take on the challenging and fun bike course designed by Escape Bikes Adventure.
  • Two Bands. We will have performances by the professional country band, Steel Toe Boots (http://www.thesteeltoeboots.com/), who will be sure to get you dancing as well as guest entertainers, the JP Pipe Band, who will perform short 15-20 minute performance of Highland bagpipe music.

Inside Scoop

Here’s more on what you need to know to get the most out of our carnival.

  • To win a Raffle Basket, collect 5 Popsicle sticks and trade them in for a raffle ticket. The more tickets you accumulate, the better your chances are of winning a basket.
  • All the favourite stations are back and there’s so much more including live music, line dance calling, sumptuous food and new stations to try.
  • For the old-time country fair events, namely, the three-legged race, sack race and tug of war, there will be three races in each event. Sign-up sheets will be available at the ticket booth on the day of the event. So get out there and assemble your A-team to see if you’re part of the strongest, fastest, and best team at our school.
  • Tickets are only $1 each and will be available for purchase the week of the Spring Carnival starting Monday, June 16th as well as on the day of the event.
  • Community is a big part of this year’s carnival — we want to see parents out there engaging in some friendly competition and fun with the children.

Help Wanted Ads

  • Mystery Bag Maker. Skills required – industrious attitude and creative mind. Every year we run out of mystery bags to hand out. Please help out by dropping off as many as you can make so every child receives one. For the older children, consider gift cards to booster juice, hair accessories, fun stationary, and candy. Please do not include toy weapons and add only new items to the bags. We are aiming for 250 mystery bags this year. Drop it off at the PAC donation box or bring them on the day of the carnvial. • Baker. Skills required – sweet tooth and sharing nature. The Cake Walk is always one of the most popular booths. On the day of the event, please drop off home-baked goods as well as store- bought items. Every cupcake and cookie helps.
  • Cook Shack Hands. Skills required – grill ready and steady. The Cook Shack needs to be set up, manned during the BBQs, and torn down. We need nine people to sign up.
  • Donations. We are asking for items to be put towards one of our raffle baskets, Games Night, any new and unused items from home. There will be a box in the foyer near the PAC mail box for all donations including mystery bags. No time to do the shopping, we also accept cash donations which can be given to class reps or to the office.

Please contact the Spring Carnival Coordinator, Tamrah Corben at corbenst@telus.net to volunteer, donate and for any questions.

Friday Newsletter: Survey | Grade 7 Farewell | Labour Conflict | Spring Fair

Dear parents,

  • Please take a moment to fill out this anonymous survey that covers parent perception of North Vancouver school district schools.  How do you feel about your school environment, personalized learning, parent engagement, student engagement, school communication and the overall education your children receive. This information will help NVPAC provide better feedback to North Vancouver School District and thereby ensure our schools continue to meet the needs of students and their families district-wide.   The survey is open till Sunday, June 8.  The results of the survey will be posted to blog.northvanpac.org.
  • The Grade 7 farewell is still on and details will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
  • Just a reminder that in this current labour conflict, parents do have a voice and can make their feelings known by contacting their elected representatives.   Please visit the Ross Road Advocacy page for contact details.
  • Don’t forget that the Spring Fair is still on Friday, June 20 from 5pm to 8pm.  Click here for the most recent update from the planning committee.    We’ll advise as soon as we can if it will be impacted by the job action.

Have a great weekend,

The 2014 Spring Carnival is around the corner, Friday, June 20, 2014 from 5-8 pm, and it’s sure to be a great Ross Road family event. With an old-time country fair theme and performance by the professional country band, Steel Toe Boots (http://www.thesteeltoeboots.com/), this year’s carnival is sure to get you dancing.  Come hungry for our classic Cook Shack favourites brought to us by the Lynn Valley Lions: burgers, hotdogs, fries, onion rings, and much more. And what’s a carnival without popcorn, cotton candy, and new this year, SLUSHIES!  Community is a big part of this year’s carnival and we want to encourage parents to participate in some friendly competition. Pair up with your children or go solo and enjoy our sack races, Tug of War and three-legged races. Why not give line dancing a try under the big-top following the lead of our fair’s “expert” dance caller/dancers?

Inside Scoop

  • Each class is assigned a station. Class reps will be sending more information on how to sign up for a quick 30 minute shift. Stay tuned!
  • Silent Auction items will be on display during the event. Stop by to see what amazing things you can bid on.
  • The top stations are back: Crazy Hair, Calk Walk, Face Painting, Pony Rides, Bouncy Castle. And new this year, a Dunk Tank. They’re lots of fun and lots of chances to win an awesome raffle basket.

Recap from last week

  • Tickets are only $1 each and will be available for purchase the week of the Spring Carnival starting Monday, June 16th as well as on the day of the event.
  • Raffle Baskets are again this year’s big prizes as a reward from your hard work at the each station. When you try an activity and receive a popsicle stick—more sticks means more chances to win a Raffle Basket. When you’ve collected five sticks, redeem them for a raffle ticket. This means that the more fun you have at the fair, the better your chances are of winning a fantastic raffle basket.
  • Mystery Bags station has two openings, 5:30 and 6:30. Come by with your tickets and purchase these popular bags, one per child. Get a fun stamp to help give others a chance to receive a bag and spread the love around.

Help Wanted

  • We need DONATIONS. Please help us make this another huge success. One way to do this is to donate items to our Mystery Bags, Raffle Baskets, Silent Auction, Calk Walk. Financial donations are also welcome!
  • Dads the Cook Shack needs your help setting up, manning BBQs, serving food and tear down. We need 7 people to sign up.

Please contact the Spring Carnival Coordinator, Tamrah Corben at corbenst@telus.net to volunteer, donate and for any questions.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: TEACHER/GOVERNMENT LABOUR CONFLICT

Dear parents,

As the labour conflict continues, the PAC will continue to provide you with information that you may find relevant.

  • Last week’s meet-up at the offices of MLA Jane Thornthwaite was a huge success.    Dozens of concerned parents gathered in the rain to talk about the issues, and hear a perspective from a number of Ross Road teachers.
  • With strike action planned for tomorrow, many parents are meeting up again at 2pm in Lynn Valley Village square to review and discuss questions to ask Ms Thornthwaite.  Please come along and make your voice heard.  A number of parents are currently seeking a meeting with Ms Thornthwaite.  If you’d like to know more, and make your voice heard, this gathering tomorrow is a good place to start.
  • Ms Thornthwaite is also having one of her regular “Join Jane” drop-in events at Lynn Valley Main Library on Thursday, June 19 from 10-11am.  Further details can be found here.
  • A Facebook group has been set up for concerned parents on the North Shore –  https://www.facebook.com/NVparents

And, just an additional reminder, that tomorrow’s track meet at Swangard is definitely ON.  Click here for more info.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: SWANGARD TRACK MEET IS ON FOR THIS TUESDAY!

Dear parents,

Further to the communication from the District on Friday afternoon, 60 Minutes Kids Club (www.60minkidsclub.org) will be hosting the athletic event at Swangard Stadium on Tuesday, June 3rd.  A group of dedicated parent volunteers is working with 60 Minute Kids Club to deliver the event as planned by the teachers.  We are not the hero’s or heroines – the kids are the champions of this day. The teachers have spent hours coaching and preparing the kids for this finale, they too are champions and we look forward to seeing them perform.  Kids first!

The day will be run as close as possible to the typical annual event.  Hopefully you received the order of events from your school teacher last week – that is the order we will be following on Tuesday.  Athletes are asked to arrive at 8:15 am, sit in their school’s designated section in the stands at Swangard and prepare for the parade at 8:45 am.  Track and field events start at 9:15 am.

A few key points about the event:

  • we have a signed contract with Swangard and insurance is in place for the day
  • only those athletes that qualified at their Zone qualification meet are invited to participate.  We do not have the capacity to safely include other athletes.  Spares and volunteers previously designated by their school track teacher are welcome to continue with their planned role.
  • all participants and fans MUST sign a waiver.  The waiver is attached.  Arriving at Swangard with a signed waiver is preferred, but waivers will be available from volunteers at the drop off areas at Swangard as well.  Please either arrange with your child’s car pool driver to sign on your child’s behalf, or send a signed waiver with your child.
  • there will be no concession so please send your child with food and hydration for the day.  Remember that the weather forecast is for sun on Tuesday, so sunscreen and hats are also required.
  • parent volunteers will be wearing white shirts.  If you have any questions during the day, please ask one of the volunteers.  I
Required items from your school:
  • If possible, athletes should wear their school team jerseys.  If not, please wear a t-shirt in your school color.  (Desiree is working on getting the Ross Road banner and jerseys).
  • We would also like to see the school banners in the parade and posted on Swangard’s fence, so see if you can borrow the banner from the school.

What else can you do?

If you can volunteer that day please contact Matt Young at matt@innovativefitness.com or at 604-218-1716
1. first aid – if anyone has a contact & favor they can pull, please let Matt know. They do have qualified volunteers on site, but they need the gear.
2. participating schools – ideally they would like to see kids from all 25 NV Schools who participated in track and field and qualified for Swangard. Please reply to matt@innovativefitness.com with the name of your son/daughter and the name of the school if you are participating this Tuesday so they can list & know that information. Additionally, if you happen to know someone from another school, please help us make them aware and encourage them to be the school rep (in terms of sending info out) to let them know it’s on & same format.

School spirit is alive and well among the North Van elementary schools! Please spread the word of this event to other athletes that qualified.  Thank you for your assistance.

(Ross Road School or the North Vancouver School District will likely follow up on their communication on Friday and send out this information as well sometime Monday, but  we are trying to give parents a heads-up as early as possible)

TEACHER / GOVERNMENT LABOUR CONFLICT

Dear Parents,

From time to time, the PAC posts items that we think are relevant to a large number of Ross Road parents. This is one such time.

Once again, the BC teachers are involved in a job action conflict with the BC Government and once again, this is a difficult time for everyone. As a parent group, our mandate is to support students and teachers at our school. While we may or may not agree with teachers’ job action and the current strike action, we can see the effects of budget cuts over the last several years. As a middle-of-the-road PAC, our resources are being stretched thinner and thinner as we try to provide the things that in the past were a part of the government’s budget for schools. Examples from Ross Road include: library books, laptops, iPads, projectors for classrooms, art supplies and gym equipment.

As we all know, the strength and health of our society depends to no small degree on the investment we place in public education. If we do not prepare for the future through quality education for all today, we will not be able to maintain our standard and quality of living tomorrow, when today’s students will be responsible for society as leaders, workers, teachers, thinkers and health care workers. What sort of society do we want our children to grow up in? What sort of society to we want to grow old in? That is the central issue!

If you want to write a letter to MLA Ms Thornthwaite, click here to view a (very informative) sample letter that you are welcome to copy or cut-and-paste from.

Some brief facts:

  • BC has the second lowest per student funding levels in all of Canada.
  • Teachers can give more individual attention to students in smaller classes.
  • The Supreme Court of BC recently ruled that the BC Government must return class sizes and composition to 2001 levels and allow the BCTF to negotiate these as part of their working conditions in contracts with the government.
  • The BC Government is appealing this decision….again.
  • Government claims that teachers’ demands require a 20% increase in funding. However these changes include the court ruling mentioned above; Some of that 20% is actually what the courts required.

Special Newsletter: Spring Fair

Dear parents,

The date for the Spring Carnival is approaching fast! The carnival will happen on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 5-8 pm, and as always, all Ross Road families are invited to join in for one of the grandest nights of the school year. This year’s carnival will have a distinctive, old-time country fair theme. Among other highlights, the professional country band Steel Toe Boots will perform from start to finish and outdoor games reminiscent of another era will be staged.

And bring your appetite! We are very grateful and excited that Lynn Valley Lions will be catering all the food for this year’s event.

Inside Scoop

Here’s what you need to know to get the most out of our carnival.

  • Tickets will be available for purchase the week of the Spring Carnival as well as the day of the event. So instead of waiting in line when you first arrive, why not purchase your tickets in advance and join in the fun right away?
  • This year’s Spring Carnival brings the chance once again to win a very special raffle basket. This is the way it works: You receive a popsicle stick for each booth you visit and for each activity you try. When you’ve collected five sticks, you can redeem them for a raffle ticket.  So the more popsicle sticks and raffle tickets you collect―the better your chances are of winning a fantastic raffle basket.
  • The popular mystery bags will be offered in two openings at 5:30 and then again at 6:30. Half the bags will be distributed during each time slot. In order to insure that every child gets at least one, we will be stamping children’s’ hands when they receive their bags. No double dipping, please!

Help Wanted Section.

  • Raffle Gift Basket Leader. Skills and experience required: Prize fighter with an artsy touch. The Carnival requires a volunteer to manage the Gift Basket Raffle. With plenty of support from others, this volunteer will ensure that the Raffle Gift Baskets contain attractive and desirable items and that the raffle proceeds smoothly.
  • First Aid Attendants. The Carnival needs at least two volunteers to act as First Aid attendants during the event.  Please volunteer your practical skills to help keep everyone safe.  Ideally, two individuals will each cover half the event from start to finish.

Please contact the Spring Carnival Director, Tamrah Corben at corbenst@telus.net to volunteer.

Thanks!  Have a great week!

Friday Newsletter: There’s lots going on!

Dear parents,

  • Don’t forget there is early dismissal (at 1.50pm) next Wednesday.  Want to keep up to date on all the official school events like this?  Click here to be taken to the Ross Road school calendar.
  • Next week is Bike to School week!  Bushnell Place will be closed at Ross Road, and there will be no valet!    K to Grade 5 will be doing their thing on Monday, so don’t forget a bike and helmet.  Grade 6 & 7 trail rides are on Tuesday.  For your child to participate in these rides, you must have signed and returned the waivers and consent forms.  And they’ll obviously  need a bike and helmet too :)  There’s lots of other things happening as well.  Check out the email that was sent to all classes earlier this week for complete information.
  • We still need volunteers for various PAC positions…..like a valet coordinator.  If you use the valet system, please consider volunteering for this very important job.  (No coordinator means no valet).  We also need someone to co-chair the PAC with Sarah Dennis.  If you’re interested in either position…or something else, please let Sarah know.
  • A big thank you to retiring members of the PAC executive….like Julie Dunsterville (co-chair) and Gillian Gorton (Environment Club).  And as always, a big thank you to all volunteers on the PAC executive and within the PAC itself.
  • Don’t forget the Spring Fair is on Friday June 20.  Mark your calendars!
  • In fundraising news, the KM club raised $147 and the Jump Rope for Heart raised over $8000! (of which 10% came back to the school to buy fitness equipment!)  Nice work!

Enjoy your weekend!
