Ross Road Bike To School Week 2017 is next week, May 29th through June 2nd.  Please prep your bikes and plan your routes to school!  Active transportation is encouraged throughout the week so if biking is not an option for you consider walking to school with your kids, skateboarding, scooting, or even driving part way and biking or walking the rest. New Ross Road Class

As many of you may have heard, Ross Road will be getting an additional class/division in September as a result of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling around class size and composition, http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bctf-wins-supreme-court-battle-over-class-size-and-composition-1.3845620,  While many parents are excited about the decision, there are concerns regarding how this will impact our school. The North Van School District has already had a site visit and are leaning towards creating classroom space by re-purposing a portion of our library, i.e. 80 sq metres out of 236 sq metres. No final decisions have been made, however we know Ross Road is not alone in this – several other elementary schools are experiencing similar effects.

What can we do, you ask? Here are a few suggestions. Our AGM next week will include this on agenda.

  1. Sign petition – http://www.thepetitionsite.com/304/212/385/protect-ross-road-elementary-library-and-other-critical-learning-spaces/
  2. Write a independent letter (template below)

Send to:

Letter template

  • Identify concern – that schools are having to sacrifice important spaces (like libraries and music rooms) to accommodate additional classrooms as a result of the supreme court decision on classroom size and composition.
  • Describe impact – repurposed library space, no community space, maximized building capacity, etc
  • Reference Supreme Court ruling and confirm community support for the ruling
  • Argue need for proper implementation of court ruling, including the need for funding infrastructure
  • Offer solution – district to fund additional portable for Ross Road

Have a great week.

SpringCarnival2013_76

Volunteers desperately needed for Spring Carnival booths – please sign up for a shift!

volunteer_reminder_header

Dear parents,

The Spring Carnival is 48 hours away…if you’ve been to one of these Ross Road events, you know they’re heaps of fun.  The kids love them, they’re great for our community and a ton of money is raised for the PAC (check out more pics from the last Spring Carnival here!).

BUT, the thing is, we’re still looking for volunteers.  We need more parents to step up and volunteer to do a shift for their class booth.  There are a number of classes where no-one is covering a shift, which means those booths may need to be cut short.  It’s only 30 minutes, so if you haven’t volunteered yet, please get in touch with your class rep directly.

If you can give more time, the Cook Shack is also in need of more volunteers…The Lions have given us the equipment and Save on Foods have given us the food…now we just need more hands on deck! Specifically, we need 2 from 3-5 pm, 2 from 5-6:30pm, 2 from 6:30-8pm and 2 from 8-10pm.  Please contact Tamrah at corbenst@telus.net to volunteer here.

So, in summary….we need YOUR help to make the Carnival a success and have FUN..the PAC relies on these events to do cool things for our kids and school. .

If you haven’t stepped up yet, please, please (pretty please!) do so.

Thanks, Ross Road PAC
