Winter Carnival Volunteers

Winter is coming! Volunteers needed!! The PAC will hold its annual Winter Fair on Friday, December 15th. Grades 4 and 5 are in charge of hosting the event, and each of these classes must put forward one volunteer to help with organizing.  Many hands make light work, so please don’t hesitate to let us know if you can help. Family Photos Follow Up

Thanks for supporting this PAC fundraiser. Please submit $20.00 to the PAC box in the foyer if you have not had a chance to do this.

Here is some other info that was not included in the photo package that you received:

  • The code for the free 8×10 photo is 7Q3L.
  • If you would like to order ONLY the 8×10, you need to call the company at 1-888-676-1647 and give them the code and information for your selected photo.
  • If you are ordering other photos, you need to go to “photo and gift” to input the code and request for the free 8×10.

New BrainStem Classes!

BRAINSTEM: LITTLE BRAINS – CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (5 WEEK SERIES)
(K – 1 boys & girls, maximum 12 students)

Dates: Mondays 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the music room Nov. 20, 27, Dec. 4, 11, 18 Cost: $112.5 + GST for 5 x 1 hour sessions
Description:

Chemical engineering uses science to process raw materials and chemicals into useful forms. They can lead to the discovery of important new materials and processes. These discoveries may be useful for other engineering disciplines or just to make our lives easier.

The little brains will learn about solutions, chemical reaction, mixtures, solids, liquids, absorption, and more concepts while using his or her creativity and curiosity the STEM methodology.

BRAINSTEM: SPECIALISTS/MANAGERS: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (5 WEEK SERIES)
(Grade 2-7 boys & girls)

Dates: Mondays 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the music room Nov. 20, 27, Dec. 4, 11, 18
Cost: $150+ GST for 5 x 1.5 hr sessions
Description:

(K – 1 boys & girls, maximum 12 students)

Dates: Thursdays 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the music room NOV. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, DEC, 7 Cost: $135+ GST for 6 x 1 hour sessions
Description:

A robotics engineer is responsible for design, creating, and programming robots. Robotic systems that can perform duties that humans are either unable or prefer not to complete. Robots help to make jobs safer, easier, and more efficient, particularly in the manufacturing industry.

The little brains will discover what is behind a robot, several possible designs, the materials used, what software is, and the programming using the LEGO® WeDo materials. Computers will also be used to build their robotic animals and toys. This will be under the guidance of our leaders and assistants under the STEM education programs.

BRAINSTEM: SPECIALISTS/MANAGERS: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (6 WEEK SERIES)
(Grade 2-7 boys & girls)

Dates: Thursdays 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the music room NOV. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, DEC. 7 Cost: $180.00 + GST for 6 x 1.5 hr sessions

Description:

The electrical engineering field includes the study of electricity, development of electrical equipment, and testing. Other areas of study are the use and design of systems based on electro-magnetism and electronic devices. The children will work with all kinds of electronic and electrical devices.
The specialist and managers will learn about the electrical circuit using this in different projects like a flashlight and an electromagnet. They will build their own Nanobot; a super fast-train; magnetism and electromagnetism; snaps circuits; and even generate a clean energy from a wind aero turbine. They will discover and having fun using STEM for his or her learning.

Online Registration:

  • If your child has previously been enrolled in a BrainSTEM program, you do NOT need to fill out the online registration form again (they already have all your information). Please just call 604-379-2767 or email sarah.baldwin@brainstemlearning.ca to say you want to enroll in the program (include subject line “Ross Road After School Program”, and parent’s name, student name, student’s current age, Monday or Thursday program day and start date in the body of the email).
  • If your child has NOT previously been enrolled in a BrainSTEM program, please go to their website (http://www.brainstemlearning.ca/contact/registration/) and click “register online” at the bottom of the page. Choose Ross Road Elementary as location, NOV. 20 or NOV. 2ND as a start date, and Workshop as program type – after form is submitted, Sarah Baldwin will invoice parents for payment by online using a credit card or e-transfer to confirm registration.

Sneezes and Diseases

Sneezes and Diseases (pdf) is a resource for parents, providers in child care settings and teachers in elementary schools. It includes illness/disease prevention information, facts about diarrhea, vomiting & fever, facts about childhood diseases and infestations and what to do (treatment wise) regarding certain childhood diseases and illnesses.

SHAKEOUT TOONIE DRIVE!

Ross Road PAC is doing a Toonie Drive on the same day as Shake Out BC to raise funds for Ross Road Emergency Preparedness. These funds will replenish emergency supplies for our school.

Please send a $2 with your children for collection in their classroom.

On Thursday, October 19 at 10:19 a.m., millions of people worldwide will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. Ross Road Elementary is participating in 2017 Great British Columbia ShakeOut. Participating is a great way to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes – wherever you live, work, or travel

SOS Emergency Preparedness Fundraiser

In time for the annual drop, hold and cover on October 19th at 10.19am, we have a great opportunity for you to purchase a family emergency preparedness kit for yourselves and your loved ones. They make a great seasonal gift for loved ones and what better way to keep your loved ones safe than to have a preparedness package close at hand.
The PAC is partnering with SOS Emergency Response Technologies to sell some kits with 10 % of all proceeds going to the PAC. Please follow the link 1-4 person earthquake kits 2017 to grab a copy of your order form and to see what is available to purchase.
  • Ordering will commence from October 15th until October 29th.
  • Please fill out the order form and drop them off at the PAC drop off box in the school lobby along with a cheque for the correct amount made to ”SOS Emergency Response Technologies’.
  • When packages are ready to be picked up you will be contacted by the PAC.

Munch’a’Lunch – Ordering Now Open

Munch’a’Lunch is Ross Road’s hot lunch program.  Parents have the opportunity to order lunch for their children on Fridays starting September 29th.

We’re excited to let you know that ordering is now open for the first session of Ross Road hot lunch days.  This will run from September 29th to February 16th.  (2nd session will run from March through June) . We have a great selection of restaurants participating with rotating menu’s.

For students to receive hot lunch on September 29th, your order must be placed by September 21st.  Ordering for this first session will close on September 28th.

PAC NEWSLETTER – September 4, 2017

Enjoy your last day of summer and what a wonderful day it will be, I believe a high of 29 degrees today.

Tomorrow Grades 1-7 are back for a few hours from 8.43 to 10.43 and then full day on Wednesday onwards. Kindies are gradual entry and will have their times provided by the school.

To welcome everyone back from the wonderful summer we have had the PAC will be providing a welcome back coffee tomorrow, Tuesday 5th, from 8.30 outside the front doors next to the annex.  PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN MUGS. Lets try to be sustainable.

Kindies will have their own coffee morning on Friday 8th, at 9am outside the front doors bu the annex (weather dependant).  Again please bring your own mug.

A reminder that there will be PAC Family photos this month. More information will be coming on this.

Munch-a-lunch details will be available soon so stay on the look out for that.

Yes that is right 3 more days until school wraps up.

Just a few things to mention:

The Spring Carnival was a runaway success. We had the weather cooperate and the turn out was amazing. Thanks to all those that made the event amazing. The PAC raised $9,700

We also had two other events take place last week, the Screenagers showing and the PAC Volunteer Appreciation night. Hopefully the kids and parents got a lot out of watching Screenagers. in terms of the PAC Volunteer Appreciation night we will look to hold this every year so that we can show all the volunteers who make things happen our appreciation.

Volunteers Needed

As this school year ends and we anticipate the start of the new school term we are looking for new volunteers and PAC EXEC members. We ‘d like to take a moment to thank Tamrah Corben, Scott Munro, and Jen Nuttall for all their hard work and time on the Exec committee. They will be stepping down from their roles making way for new volunteers. Positions needed for 2017/2018 are as follows:

Spring Carnival is coming! Friday, June 9th, 5pm – 8pm

This year’s theme is 🐥YELLOW and GREEN 🐸, so wear an outfit that screams lemon and lime.

Rain or shine, we will have a good time!

  • Presales in the school lobby on Friday, 8:30-9 am and 2:45 – 3:15 pm
  • There will be two tables selling tickets at the Carnival as well

Sweet treats needed for Cake Walk. Homemade or store bought, all desserts are welcome. Drop off at the office on the day of the Carnival, or bring them to the Cake Walk game after 5.

Please lend us pop-up tents and coolers.

Donate a bottle for wine for the raffle basket. Drop off at the office anytime before Carnival.

Raffle Baskets. There are six kid-friendly baskets and a few for grown ups too.

  • Just like last year, kids get 1 popsicle stick for every station they do.
  • Once they get 3 popsicle sticks, they can trade them in for 1 raffle ticket at the raffle basket table.
  • You can also buy raffle tickets for $3 ea, from the Ticket table
  • Make sure you fill in your name and phone number before dropping the raffle ticket into the basket. Keep one half for yourself!

Screenagers Growing up in the Digital Age 

  • Please click on the link below to tell us how many people to expect, we need to know by June 9th – FRIDAYhttps://impactflow.com/event/3114/checkout/tickets we will then be able to determine if we are going to do the showing in the gym or library
  • The showing will take place on June 12th at 7pm
  • This event is open to friends and family, there is no charge to the movie for the Ross Road community however we will be asking for a donation from friends and other LV schools communities that wish to attend.  SPREAD THE WORD
  • All students in grade 6 and 7 will be watching this film on Tuesday June 13th

Volunteer Appreciation Night

  • All parents who have volunteered an hour or more this year are invited
  • There will be music, food and door prizes. BYOB
  • Saturday June 17th, 7pm

  • RSVP to the PAC email to help Plan ordering by JUNE 15th
