Winter Carnival Volunteers
Winter is coming! Volunteers needed!! The PAC will hold its annual Winter Fair on Friday, December 15th. Grades 4 and 5 are in charge of hosting the event, and each of these classes must put forward one volunteer to help with organizing. Many hands make light work, so please don’t hesitate to let us know if you can help. Email us at rossroadpac@gmail.com

- If you would like to order ONLY the 8×10, you need to call the company at 1-888-676-1647 and give them the code and information for your selected photo.
- If you are ordering other photos, you need to go to “photo and gift” to input the code and request for the free 8×10.

New BrainStem Classes!
BRAINSTEM: LITTLE BRAINS – CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (5 WEEK SERIES)
(K – 1 boys & girls, maximum 12 students)
Dates: Mondays 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the music room Nov. 20, 27, Dec. 4, 11, 18 Cost: $112.5 + GST for 5 x 1 hour sessions
Description:
Chemical engineering uses science to process raw materials and chemicals into useful forms. They can lead to the discovery of important new materials and processes. These discoveries may be useful for other engineering disciplines or just to make our lives easier.
The little brains will learn about solutions, chemical reaction, mixtures, solids, liquids, absorption, and more concepts while using his or her creativity and curiosity the STEM methodology.
BRAINSTEM: SPECIALISTS/MANAGERS: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (5 WEEK SERIES)
(Grade 2-7 boys & girls)
Dates: Mondays 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the music room Nov. 20, 27, Dec. 4, 11, 18
Cost: $150+ GST for 5 x 1.5 hr sessions

BRAINSTEM: LITTLE BRAINS – ROBOTICS ENGINEERING 1 (6 WEEK SERIES)
(K – 1 boys & girls, maximum 12 students)
Dates: Thursdays 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the music room NOV. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, DEC, 7 Cost: $135+ GST for 6 x 1 hour sessions
Description:
A robotics engineer is responsible for design, creating, and programming robots. Robotic systems that can perform duties that humans are either unable or prefer not to complete. Robots help to make jobs safer, easier, and more efficient, particularly in the manufacturing industry.
The little brains will discover what is behind a robot, several possible designs, the materials used, what software is, and the programming using the LEGO® WeDo materials. Computers will also be used to build their robotic animals and toys. This will be under the guidance of our leaders and assistants under the STEM education programs.
BRAINSTEM: SPECIALISTS/MANAGERS: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (6 WEEK SERIES)
(Grade 2-7 boys & girls)
Dates: Thursdays 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the music room NOV. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, DEC. 7 Cost: $180.00 + GST for 6 x 1.5 hr sessions
Description:
The electrical engineering field includes the study of electricity, development of electrical equipment, and testing. Other areas of study are the use and design of systems based on electro-magnetism and electronic devices. The children will work with all kinds of electronic and electrical devices.
The specialist and managers will learn about the electrical circuit using this in different projects like a flashlight and an electromagnet. They will build their own Nanobot; a super fast-train; magnetism and electromagnetism; snaps circuits; and even generate a clean energy from a wind aero turbine. They will discover and having fun using STEM for his or her learning.
Online Registration:
- If your child has previously been enrolled in a BrainSTEM program, you do NOT need to fill out the online registration form again (they already have all your information). Please just call 604-379-2767 or email sarah.baldwin@brainstemlearning.ca to say you want to enroll in the program (include subject line “Ross Road After School Program”, and parent’s name, student name, student’s current age, Monday or Thursday program day and start date in the body of the email).
- If your child has NOT previously been enrolled in a BrainSTEM program, please go to their website (http://www.brainstemlearning.ca/contact/registration/) and click “register online” at the bottom of the page. Choose Ross Road Elementary as location, NOV. 20 or NOV. 2ND as a start date, and Workshop as program type – after form is submitted, Sarah Baldwin will invoice parents for payment by online using a credit card or e-transfer to confirm registration.
Sneezes and Diseases
Sneezes and Diseases (pdf) is a resource for parents, providers in child care settings and teachers in elementary schools. It includes illness/disease prevention information, facts about diarrhea, vomiting & fever, facts about childhood diseases and infestations and what to do (treatment wise) regarding certain childhood diseases and illnesses.
