2011-12 School Directory

2009-2010 Ross Road School Directory

Thank you for taking the time to fill out the PAC Contact Permission Form! (Click here for more details about the form). As indicated on the form, the contact details collected from the submitted forms will be used to create a Parent Email Network (used by Class Reps to contact parents) and also a School Directory, a very handy printed resource!

For new parents at Ross Road School, here is some more information about the School Directory:

  • The School Directory is a project of the Ross Road Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and is intended as a resource for students and parents of École Ross Road School. Even in this technological age, it’s great to have a printed publication to refer to in order to quickly get in touch with other parents!
  • The Directory lists student names by division, along with an alphabetical listing of Ross Road families, their home addresses and their phone numbers.
  • The Directory is published every 2 years – the last directory was published in 2009, so this is the year for a new one!
  • It is also intended as a small fundraiser for the school.  The cost of printing and binding the Directory is funded by the PAC, business sponsors (parent and other), and a nominal copy charge or donation. Once the Directory is printed and binded, all profits raised from the sale of the Directories go back to the school.

The information contained in the Directory is compiled in cooperation with École Ross Road School administration. Your individual consent to be included in this Directory is required. The Directory will only be used for school community use and will not be distributed outside the school population or used for any commercial, political, or other purposes.

Class reps needed for 2011/12 year

Each school year we need at least one volunteer from every class to be the class representative to the Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The time required is only a few hours throughout the school year and most of the tasks can be done by email. Many classes choose to have more than one class rep so that the tasks can be shared.

  • Class reps are a vital link between the teacher, classroom activities and PAC-sponsored events. Without our class reps and parent support from each classroom, these events would not be possible.
  • Click here to find out more about Class Rep responsibilities.
  • Becoming a class rep is a great opportunity to meet other parents, to get to know your child’s teacher and to work to enhance our school community!

If you are interested in being a class rep, please contact Jennifer VanderMye (the PAC’s Class Rep Coordinator) at jenandclark@shaw.ca with your child’s name, class teacher and grade, or contact Linda Gelley at the school office.

Thank you for your attention,
— Jen VanderMye / Ross Road PAC

PAC Contact Permission Form – please fill out and return by Tuesday, September 20th

Gillian G, dropping off her completed form in the PAC drop-box under the Down stairs in the school lobby – it's that easy, folks! ;-)

Last week, the school office sent an email to every Ross Road family containing the 2011-12 PAC Contact Permission Form in electronic format (Adobe PDF).

The PAC (Parent Advisory Council) is distributing this form in an electronic format so that it may independently obtain parent contact information and get class lists distributed to Class Reps as quickly as possible.

The contact information collected from each form is used to set up a Parent Email Network and to create a School Directory.

Please print out and fill out the form on page 2 of the 2011-12 PAC Contact Permission Form and return to the PAC drop-box in the school lobby (under the “Down” stairs) by Tuesday, September 20th.

A few notes:

  • Only one form needs to be filled out per family
  • Please print clearly
  • Please use the Comments box at the bottom of the form if you wish to include additional information/instructions
  • Hard copies of this form may be obtained at the school office
  • Please return this form even if you do not want to receive PAC email communications and do not want to be included in the 2011 School Directory

Ross Road Pancake Breakfast – Friday, September 16th

Just a reminder about the Ross Road Pancake Breakfast on Friday, September 16th. This is the staff’s opportunity to show their appreciation to our wonderful parent community so please come on out!

The staff will start serving at 8:15am at the back of the school and will then hold the bells until about 9:00am.

In the interests of being ‘green’, please remember to bring your own plate, mug, cutlery and juice for your child as desired.

Hope to see you there!

Ross Road “Valet Service” is up and running again…and needs parent volunteers!

As promised, the Ross Road Valet Service began on the first full day of school and it was a huge success! It was amazing how smoothly the first morning drop-off went!

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:

  • This valuable service is run 100% by parent and student volunteers and so to keep it going throughout the year we need more parent volunteers to step forward.
  • The time commitment is small – it only involves volunteering for 25 minutes (from 8:25am to 8:50am), one day a week for one month.
  • If you can help out now or in the future, please contact Nancy Barton at nancybinbc@hotmail.com

The Valet Service runs from 8:30 am to 8:45 am, Monday to Friday in order to help relieve the congestion in the drop-off zone (see map below) during the morning rush and to ensure the roads in front of the school are safe for pedestrians and drivers.

To help the valet service run smoothly, here are a few important points to remember:

  • Look for the volunteers in the safety vests and follow their directions.
  • Have your children ready to go (i.e. jackets on, backpacks with them, explain to them that you will not be getting out of the car)
  • There is NO PARKING in the drop-off zone.
  • All drivers must remain in their cars.
  • If you would like to walk your children to class, please park in the designated area on Ross Road or Kilkenny Road.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Spring Carnival 2011

What a year it’s been for Ross Road School! From the PAC Executive, we would like to thank everyone in the school community for all their support throughout the 2010-2011 school year!

We’ve had major success with our large events — the Adult night in the fall, the Christmas Craft Fair, Bingo and the Spring Carnival — and have raised much needed funds for the students at Ross Road. For example, the Spring Carnival’s net profit this year was a whopping $7,200! Imagine having so much fun and making all that money at the same time! Well done, Ross Road!

A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers without whom this would not have been possible! With this last post of the 2010-2011 school year, we wish you all a wonderful, fun and safe summer!

And don’t forget to check out these recently added posts:

See you in September!

Ross Road Front Garden – what an amazing transformation!

The Ross Road front garden was a wild tangle of overgrown plants in September 2010…now after many months of planning and hard work it is a beautiful, colourful, thoughtfully laid out oasis for the Ross Road Community to enjoy each day!

It has also provided a wonderful educational experience for many students. Members of the Environment Club and several classes have planted edible plants (peas, lettuce, strawberries etc) in pots and raised beds and are looking forward to harvesting the fruits of their labours!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The front garden project was an ENORMOUS amount of work for parent volunteers who in the fall of 2010 pulled out every single overgrown plant and then replanted some of the best shrubs along with some new fall and spring flowering perennials. The second stage, in the spring of 2011, involved laying down mulch and rocks, and installing and filling the raised beds with plants.

A huge thank you goes out to Susan Chalmers who did so much work and took the lead on this project. Those helping out included: Kirsten Clarke, Lene Burgmann, Simone Stewart, Johanna Mantinsen, Bettina Harris, Janice Sardari, Tiffany Hillier, Sophia McDonald, Layne and Michael Christensen, Dale Weidman, Ruben Sluis, Kristen Oostinde and any others we may have missed! Also a big thank you to John Terjesen who donated some bark mulch, Nicole and Santi Palacios for the rocks, and Karen and Don MacDonald for the wood to make the raised beds.

Thank you to Gillian Gorton for her work with the Environment Club and to the Environment Club members for maintaining their “Edible Garden of Eat-In” pots in the front garden so conscientiously!
