Food Day ordering is now open for Session 1:
October 5, 2012 to March 8, 2013

We will be ordering using MunchaLunch: www.munchalunch.com

  • There will be 8 Food Days between October 5 and March 8. We will be adding Sushi (which includes a variety of other items such as teriyaki chicken on rice and gyoza) to our menu, and we’ll now offer cookies from Save-On Foods.
  • Instead of offering Booster Juice at each Food Day there will now be special Booster Juice days and Pinkberry frozen yogurt days in between certain Food Days.
  • You can refer to the bottom of this notice for a complete list of lunch themes for this session.

The last day to place your order is Friday, September 28 at midnight.

  • If you need assistance with your lunch ordering, or do not have access to the Internet, please contact Wendy Ross at: jwrosshome@gmail.com

PAYMENT DETAILS:

  • All payments must be received either by credit card/PayPal through the MunchaLunch website or by cheque made out to Ross Road PAC inserted in the PAC drop box in the school foyer no later than Monday, October 1 or your ORDER WILL BE CANCELLED. No late payments will be accepted. If possible please pay at time of ordering.
  • If you don’t receive a reminder email the day before each food day confirming your child’s lunch please contact us as your order may not have been processed.
  • Please double-check your order and review it with your child so he/she knows exactly what you’ve ordered for them each food day. Often children come to us confused thinking they were meant to receive food, but in fact their parents just didn’t order for them. We do not have any extra food to give out.

**PLEASE NOTE: if your child is ill on a lunch date, you are welcome to come to their class at 12:10 and pick up their lunch but we cannot keep the food for them. Consistent with previous years, there are NO REFUNDS as this is a PAC fundraiser. We appreciate your support for our hot lunch program as the funds go towards new computers and general fundraising within the school.

ABOUT FOOD DAYS
Food Days are a part of the PAC’s fundraising efforts, but most importantly they are a lot of fun for the students, as well as being a wonderful service for parents who are always relieved to have a day off here and there from the daily routine of packing of lunches! Our thanks to the Ross Road parent community for supporting this important fundraiser and to our wonderful Volunteers who help make this program a success!

Environment Club: Back-to-school update

Environment Club parent volunteers were busy over the summer, watering and tending the edible garden. Local company Progressive Fence installed the new split-rail fence, which was paid for by a Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds grant.

Thanks to Tovah Paglaro and her family for painting the signs and installing the arbour at the entrance to the edible garden.

The first Ross Road Halloween Costume Sale brought in $288.00!

As hoped, it was a win-win event! Home storage space was reclaimed, the kids got ‘new’ costumes and funds were raised for Ross Road School!

Many thanks to all the Ross Road families who donated costumes…and bought them!

And a big thank you to Barb Woznow for organizing this fabulous fundraiser!

Class Reps needed for 2012-13 school year!

Our school just wouldn’t be the same without our Class Reps – they are a vital link between teachers, parents, classroom activities and PAC-sponsored events!

Each school year we need at least one volunteer from every class to be the Class Representative to the Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The time required is only a few hours throughout the school year and most of the tasks can be done by email. Many classes choose to have more than one Class Rep so that the tasks can be shared. Click here for more info about Class Rep responsibilities.

If you are interested in becoming a 2012-13 Class Rep, please use the form below to contact Jen Vandermye, our Class Rep Coordinator:

PAC End-of-School-Year Letter to Ross Road parents

Hello Ross Road Parents,

The 2011-12 school year has drawn to a close and we’re looking back to see what we accomplished in the past year! The Ross Road PAC had a busy year with our usual events, activities and initiatives (e.g. Christmas Craft Fair, Spring Carnival, Staff Appreciation Luncheon, Valet Service, speakers).

We raised approximately $36,000 plus $10,440 in Gaming Funds in the 2011-2012 school year – which must be a record! About $11,180 of that money came from the IT Cheque-Writing Campaign.

So what did we spend all that money on? Here are the main items:

  • 20 iPad2’s (10 more to be purchased in the fall)
  • 3 outstanding musical performances at school assemblies (Ache Brazil, Hansel and Gretel Opera and Role Call)
  • $3,000 for school library replenishment / books
  • Two guest speakers: Jesse Miller / Social Media and Internet Safety (parent night and intermediate student talks) and LICE 911 parent night (at the height of lice season!)
  • Environment Club
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Classroom discretionary funds
  • Grade 7 Farewell reception

In the fall we will be purchasing:

  • Items from the teachers’ wish list (e.g. home reading books for primary grades, art supplies and more)
  • 10 more iPads (as mentioned above)

All in all, we have had a very successful year! We would like to thank the parents at Ross Road for all their support, be it as volunteers or as participants in our events and activities. A special thank you should go to the Class Reps, who are such an important part of everything we do. We couldn’t put on events and activities without their help and we are hugely appreciative of their efforts!

Looking forward, what’s on for next year? A few things are on the calendar already:

  • Family Photo days with MjM Studios (September 23 and 24)
  • Saleema Noon’s Body Science talks (Parent night Oct. 16, student talks Oct. 17 and 18)
  • Christmas Craft Fair and Spring Carnival: Bettina Harris and Desiree Blume will coordinate the Christmas Fair again next year and Sonia Han will likewise coordinate the Spring Carnival. THANK YOU, LADIES!
  • Performing Arts for the students (The PAC funds three musical performances at RR each year)
  • Valet Service (provided we continue to get enough parent and student volunteers)

We wish you all a wonderful, relaxing and safe summer! Looking forward to next year!

Letter to parents from the Advocacy Ross Road Group

Dear Fellow Parents,

This is a letter from the Advocacy Group at Ross Road. We are a group of parents who are gravely concerned about the current and future condition of public education. We have been working together to bring our concerns to the attention of elected representatives, school board officials, BCTF and the general public. We would like to share with you some of the most pressing issues.

  • Funding cuts to education over the past eleven years have changed the learning conditions in classrooms and have limited our children’s access to resources within the school. For example, system-wide there are larger class sizes and fewer aides. Ross Road, despite having more than 500 students, has a part-time librarian and inconsistent access to music and gym teachers. The number of split classes will continue to increase if the recently proposed English kindergarten/grade one split class goes ahead in the Fall. Your child may have been working off photocopies this year instead of a proper textbook, because of funding cuts. Click on the the following links for more info:
  • The “Wish List” created by Ross Road teachers and administration, and funded by money raised by Ross Road PAC has gone from supplementing the classrooms with “nice-to-have” items to providing more seemingly essential items. For example, this month it included the replacement of leveled home reading books for primary grades and a walkie-talkie for lunch and recess supervisors.
  • The District was unable to provide money in the budget this year for technology purchases. The PAC cheque-writing campaign solely funded the purchase of the iPads this year. And, in fact, the PAC has purchased all the student-use computers and iPads over the past four years. The PAC voted at the last GM to buy ten additional 10 iPads to complete the class set. This need to use PAC funds to purchase technology is even more surprising considering that the new BC Education Plan focuses on learning empowered by technology:

With a provincial election on the horizon, the time is ripe for our local and provincial representatives to be reminded that parents are voters and we are paying attention! We encourage you to take a moment now to advocate for the funding of quality public education.

  • To make it easy, email addresses and sample letters that can be cut and pasted are on the Advocacy Ross Road Sample Letters page; of course we welcome you to compose your own letters. Please note, the sample letters were created in response to the Spring 2011 budget cuts, therefore some of the text is a little out-of-context – we are in the process of editing these letters to reflect the current situation – but they are a good starting point!
  • For a list of key contact people (MLAs, Trustees, Superintendents, etc.) click here.
  • We have included several links within this post, many of which were taken from the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils’ website, to help ease the burden of staying informed on the issues affecting our children’s quality of education. Feel free to send us resources we can post on the Advocacy’s website. Click here for more Education / Job Action links (to be updated!).
  • Also, we welcome you to join the Ross Road Advocacy Group. Our kids can always use your ideas, your skills, your expertise and your time to improve their educational experience.

Thank you, and have a great summer!

Carolyn has brought so much energy, inspiration and hard work to everything she has been involved in. On behalf of the PAC Exec., we would like to say THANK YOU to Carolyn for everything she has done for the school in the years she has been involved.

Carolyn has graciously agreed to stay on the PAC as a M.A.L. (Member-at-Large) for another year, along with being Quebec Exchange Liaison, which is fantastic news!”

PAC communication system for the 2012-13 school year

Dear Parents at Ross Road,

Looking ahead to the 2012-13 school year, are you dreading all those duplicate notices you get from the PAC website, your oldest child’s class rep, your middle child’s class rep and next year perhaps also from your youngest kindergarten child’s class rep? That’s up to four identical emails in your inbox! Think all that duplication is a bit excessive? We do, too!

Starting this September, we will move towards exclusively using website posts for general PAC notices to the parent community. You sign up as a website subscriber and after that, you get ONE email notification for each notice and that’s it! Promise!

The class reps will still be emailing out notices that are particular to their class (letters from teachers, field trip notices etc.), but they will no longer handle the general PAC notices! This will also make the class rep job less time-consuming, which we are sure they will appreciate!

As preparation for this transition, the current year’s class reps will be sending encouragements to all parents to sign up as PAC website subscribers before the end of the school year, in order to be ready for the new system in September. Consider this your first encouragement to sign up! The class rep will follow up with those of you who do not have time to sign up right now.

Should anyone choose not to sign up as a subscriber, they will cease to receive any general information from the PAC. They will then have to seek out the information on the PAC website themselves.

To sign up:

  • Find the box ‘Get Ross Road PAC Updates by Email’ on the right-hand side of the page
  • Enter your email address and click on the sign-up button
  • Confirm the subscription when you receive an email from WordPress (the publishing tool that drives the PAC site) asking you to do so.

For more info about the PAC subscription service, click here:
https://rossroadpac.ca/about/subscribe/

Thank you for putting up with all the duplication, we really appreciate your patience as we move to this more efficient way of communicating!
