Winter Fair Reminders –  Fundraiser Held December 5th 5-8pm

Here’s what you can do to help:

  • MunchaLunch https://munchalunch.com/login is open for ordering Subway on the night of the fair. Click the Fundraising tab on the Munch website. Last day for orders is Friday, Nov 30.
  • Baked Items –  drop off your store-bought or homemade baking on Dec 5th.  Please leave the baking at the office, or in the staff room on the back table (near the photocopier).
  • Raffle baskets. Don’t forget your cash donations of $10-$15. Contact Ann MarieLewis annmarielewis604@gmail.com if you have questions related to class crafts or baskets.
  • Business Owners & Silent Auction.  If anyone has a business they would like to promote by donating a gift for the silent auction we welcome that.
  • We need more donations for the Shop and Wrap room (new or gently used items to donate, leave in lobby),
  • Any more wine donations? (bring a bottle in discretely & leave at office).

Emergency Preparedness Kit Fundraiser – order before November 30th

EM-PREPARE-ReadyRoss Road Elementary recently participated in the province-wide earthquake drill on October 18, the Great BC Shake Out.

Are you prepared? Do you have your emergency kits ready?

We have a great opportunity for you to purchase ready to go emergency preparedness kits for family and friends. They make great seasonal gifts and what better way to keep your loved ones safe than to have an emergency preparedness kit close at hand.

Ross Road PAC has partnered with BC Quake to offer a discount off their regular retail priced safety and survival kits. And from our purchases, BC Quake will donate back to our PAC $20 from the sale of every earthquake kit and $10 from the sale of every vehicle kit.

• Orders will commence Monday, October 22 and will close Friday, November 30.

NEW – Winter 2019 After School Programs at Ross Road

MONDAYS

Brainstem: Little Brains – Chemical Engineering Grades K-1

January 7 – March 13 (8 weeks; no class Jan 28th or Feb 18th)

3:00-4:00pm at Ross Road School Music Room

(Kindergarten students with parents’ permission are picked up from their classrooms by our lead instructor and escorted to the Music room, Gr. 1. Students make their way to music room on their own (ask if you would like the Kindergarten pick-up arrangements to be made for your gr. 1 students).

Program Description: Chemical engineering uses science to process raw materials and chemicals into useful forms. They can lead to the discovery of important new materials and processes. These discoveries may be useful for other engineering disciplines or just to make our live easier.

The little brains will learn about solutions, chemical reaction, mixtures, solids, liquids, absorption, and more concepts while using his or her creativity and curiosity the STEM methodology.

Girls with Grit – Girls; Grades 3-5

Program Description: Let’s raise a generation of girls who are mentally happy and healthy, who know it’s okay to be strong and soft at the same time, who know how to deal with adversity, and who are totally in-tune with their unique awesome-ness.

At Girls with Grit, we use yoga to show how strong our bodies are, mindful meditation (aka #braintrain) to show how strong our spirits are, and awesome crafts to show how strong our creative sparks are. We also talk about real topics like friendships, stress, pressure, anxiety + mental health, gender stereotypes, technology, compassion, empathy and what being an awesome girl is really all about. Oh yeah – we also laugh alot!  And we’d love you to join us.

Brainstem: Specialists/Managers: Aerospace Astronautical Engineering – Grades 2-7

January 10 – March 14 (10 weeks)

3:00-4:30pm at Ross Road School Music Room

Program Description: Aerospace engineering involves the design and construction of planes and space shuttles. Aeronautical engineering covers crafts that stay inside the Earth’s atmosphere (such as commercial planes) while astronautical engineering covers craft that leave the Earth’s atmosphere (theory and practice of navigation beyond Earth’s atmosphere, such as space shuttles).

In this program the specialist and managers will learn about the fundamentals of astronautical industry discovering about aerodynamics; gravity; velocity; acceleration; forces to lift, drag and thrust objects; aerodynamics like Bernoulli principle; and space environment characteristics. They will use math to improve their results; will discover about the importance of the materials in this engineering branch; and use his or her creativity and curiosity to design, build and test their own prototypes at the same time they have fun.

Ross Road Winter Fair

The Ross Road Winter Fair is Wednesday December 5th from 5-8pm

Our PAC has requested the Grade 4 & 5’s to lead the organization of the annual Winter Fair.
This was a great success last year; lots of fun, crafts, food, shop & wrap, and this is a BIG fundraiser for our school.
Your class reps will be collecting a suggested donation of $10 – $15 to help make this event a success.
Here’s what you can help with now:
  • Donate $10-15 to your class rep – this helps us with purchasing the materials and supplies we will need.
  • Collection for the “SHOP & WRAP” has started. You can bring lightly used or fairly new items from around your home (leave under the stairs in the front entrance).
  • MUNCH – A – LUNCH IS NOW OPEN – order Subway for dinner at the Fair  https://munchalunch.com/login
  • Donate to the Wine basket raffle – if you have a bottle of wine you could donate, please bring discreetly to the school office.
  • All the classes have also been assigned a theme for the raffle baskets. Your class rep may need some help!
  • We need VOLUNTEERS!!!! THE SIGN UP WEBSITE IS COMING EARLY NEXT WEEK.

PAC REMINDERS

Parent helpers needed to catalogue new library books  

Our school library has received a large volume of new books, due in part to PAC fundraising, that need to be prepared for circulation. Our school Teacher-Librarian Maria McAllister is looking for parent helpers on three upcoming dates to help with this:
Monday, November 19  8:50am-12:00pm
Friday, November 23     12:50pm-2:50pm
Monday, November 26  8:50am-12:00pm
If you can give some time to help out on one of those dates, that would be an immense help to get the new books ready quickly for our kids to read and enjoy. Parent helpers will give each book a stamp and a barcode, and apply a protective tape to the book spines. Please sign up to help out at the link below.

The Card Project – last call for orders

The Card Project is (once again!) a great success.

A special “Thank You” goes to our teachers who made such beautiful art with our children.

This is a friendly reminder to those who still want to order greeting cards, notebooks or canvasses with their child’s art:

Final orders are due this Friday, November 16 for delivery by December 10 – 14.

The priority orders which were received by October 28 will be delivered by November 26.

Quebec Exchange Winter Fundraising Campaign – last call for orders

The Ross Road students in Grade 7 French Immersion are asking for your help to raise funds for their trip to Quebec exchange trip this winter!

Order forms are due by this Friday, November 16, 2018. Pick up of your order will be at Ross Road on Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 pm.

Ross Road PAC Movie Night

Were you there? The Ross Road PAC Movie night was a great success!

Parents and kids enjoyed dinner and a movie organized by the PAC at Ross Road School Gym.

Thanks to:

  • Jennifer Bryan and Dana Samis for organizing such a fun event and to parent volunteers Michelle Shrigley, Ingrid Mullins and Nikki Dahl for helping that night

Ross Road Winter Fair

Mark you calendars, the Ross Road Winter Fair is on Wednesday December 5th, from 5-8pm.

Grade 4’s & 5’s are hosting the event, but we need more help to make this special fundraiser happen.

  • Class reps will be collecting donations to go towards amazing raffle baskets and mystery cards. We are asking about $10-15/student
  • Clean out your closet and donate any new or lightly used items to the Shop & Wrap room. We will have cardboard boxes under the stairs in the lobby for donations.
  • Parents like raffle baskets too, so please consider donating bottles of wine or beer.  Drop bottles off at the office, and let them know it’s for Winter Fair.
  • Plan dinner in advance. MunchaLunch will soon be open to order Subway for dinner at the Fair.
  • Keep an eye out for the Volunteer Sign up for the night of the Fair. It takes a village to set up, take down and staff the event.
  • Bring homemade and store-bought goodies for the Bake Sale (drop off on the day of the Fair!)
  • And, if you are the parent of a Grade 4 & 5 student, we especially need your help. We still need people to plan the Bake Table, organize the Shop and Wrap room and plan crafts for the Craft Room. Contact Susan at skneale17@gmail.com to find out more.

Join us for a fun Family Movie Night in the Ross Road School gym on Friday November 9th. The Ross Road School PAC presents ‘Teen Titans GO! To The Movies’. Come in your PJs with your comfy blankets and pillows, or lawn chairs, to set up in the gym and settle in for this silly animated film feature.

Why? To bring school families together for a fun fundraising event in support of the Ross Road School PAC.

A popcorn and candy concession will be available before the movie. And…if you want to truly take the night off and make it ‘dinner and a movie’, the Mom’s Grilled Cheese Truck will be on-site starting at 5:30pm providing delicious warm sandwiches for purchase.

Admission to the movie is by donation to the Ross Road School PAC.

This is a parent supervised event. Students will not be admitted without a supervising adult.

We are almost half way through our first term and Ross Road school is in full swing now.

Our Ross Road PAC team has already been working hard this year and there are lots of great events coming up at Ross Road!

Do you know a new family who has joined our school community this year? Check in with them and see if they are receiving our PAC Newsletters. If they are not, spread the word. Send them the link (www.rossroadpac.ca) and encourage them to subscribe. Our newsletters are the best way to find out what the PAC has been doing.

The Ross Road School Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is your parent community at the school.

We invite you to join us at our first PAC General Meeting of the school year!

It will be held this Wednesday October 24th at 7pm in the school library.

All Ross Road parents are invited and encouraged to attend. It’s a great opportunity to find our what’s going on in our school and connect with our school community. Your involvement is always appreciated.

Our principal Susan Owens will present the 2018/19 school plan and the PAC will discuss upcoming events and fundraising programs.

Free Babysitting is available upon request at the school during the PAC meeting. Please email us by Tuesday October 23rd if you need babysitting so we can plan for the appropriate number of student babysitters.

The Card Project

The children made amazing art for this exciting fundraiser.  The Card Project uses the children’s masterpieces to make professionally printed greeting cards and notebooks. Every child will get a copy of their unique greeting card in early November. Their own art is printed on the front of the card and their name and grade is printed on the back.

You don’t have to wait to see their cards!

On Monday, October 23 you can take a sneak peek and place a Priority Order online!

Priority Order deadline is October 28 for delivery by November 26

Notebooks (price per notebook: $18)

Two styles of notebooks are available:

  • 5″ x 11″ sketchbooks with 80 blank pages.
  • 5″ x 7.5″ journals with 120 lined pages.

Art Prints

  • The smaller art prints (up to 8.5″ x 11″) are $12 each.
  • The larger art prints (up to 12″ x 16″) are $16 each.

Ross Road Winter Fair Announcement

The Ross Road Winter Fair is right around the corner!

The date is Wednesday December 5th.

You will not want to miss our Winter Fair this year. There are lots of fun activities planned and we need your help to make it happen!

Emergency Preparedness Kit Fundraiser

EM-PREPARE-ReadyRoss Road Elementary recently participated in the province-wide earthquake drill on October 18, the Great BC Shake Out.

Are you prepared? Do you have your emergency kits ready?

We have a great opportunity for you to purchase ready to go emergency preparedness kits for family and friends. They make great seasonal gifts and what better way to keep your loved ones safe than to have an emergency preparedness kit close at hand.

Ross Road PAC has partnered with BC Quake to offer a discount off their regular retail priced safety and survival kits. And from our purchases, BC Quake will donate back to our PAC $20 from the sale of every earthquake kit and $10 from the sale of every vehicle kit.

• Orders will commence Monday, October 22 and will close Friday, November 30.

• Orders will be delivered Friday, December 14.

We Day Family Vancouver

While our traditional WE Day celebrates students and educators, WE Day Family is a chance to extend this celebration to families and community members. As an evening event, it is a fantastic opportunity to bring people together and get inspired to make a difference both locally and globally.

Registration for WE Day Family Vancouver is through Ticketmaster:

Jackie is a Munch a Lunch Coordinator and our Bike to School Week Coordinator. Both our kids and parents appreciate what you do for our school. The kids enjoy fun activities during Bike to School Week.

All year long we appreciate the work you put into ensuring everything is working smoothly on the back end to ensure our Munch a Lunch orders go through. That is a gift of your time that we all benefit from. Thank you Jackie!

We invite you to join us at our first PAC General Meeting of the school year!

Wednesday October 24th at 7pm in the school library.

All Ross Road parents are invited and encouraged to attend. It’s a great opportunity to find our what’s going on in our school and connect with our school community. Your involvement is always appreciated.

Our principal Susan Owens will present the 2018/19 school plan and the PAC will discuss upcoming events and fundraising programs.

Free Babysitting is available upon request at the school during the PAC meeting. Please email us by Tuesday October 23rd if you need babysitting so we can plan for the appropriate number of student babysitters.

THE CARD PROJECT

THE CARD PROJECT is back this Fall! art

Our students are once again participating in this exciting fundraiser. They are already working on their special art projects!

The Card Project will turn our children’s art into unique greeting cards!

Every child will receive a free greeting card that showcases their own art. The back of their card is customized with their name and grade.

While the cards are being printed, you will be able to view your child’s art online at

The children’s art goes ONLINE on October 22

The Priority Order deadline is October 28

Priority orders will be ready for delivery by November 26

This is a wonderful, creative fundraising initiative for our school.

We receive 20% of the sales.

Orders are placed online. You can order more of your child’s card as well as notebooks and sketchbooks with your child’s art on the cover.

By the way, the cards and notebooks make great gifts!
