PAC Newsletter – Jan 20, 2017

january

We can finally see the playground again. The ice is melting slowly but surely. Hopefully we can expect all the snow and ice to be gone by Monday.

Updates

  • The Card Project – Last term the students put together some christmas cards which were sold through our fundraiser. The students have decided that Make-A-Wish Foundation is the charity that they would like to donate 25 % of card project funds to. This totals around $500. Great jobs parents and students.
  • This last week we had a visitor, Sarah Stark  part of the Salema Noon group to talk to the kids and parents about sexual health. The parent evening was very informative and really helpful for addressing such sensitive topics.

To summarize the parent evening, Sarah provided handouts summarizing the topics she would discuss at each age group.

Kindies and grade 1s were shown books and pictures to describe the anatomy. She talked about the different ways families are formed and touched briefly upon safety – not picking up needles or used condoms.

At Gr2-3 she reviewed all the previous info and added more about periods and wet dreams as clean and healthy processes.

Gr 4-5 all the previous info and basic info about sexually transmitted infections, that  homophobic language, jokes and attitudes are unacceptable, physical and emotional changes at puberty, how to make smart decision and stay safe on the internet.

Gr6-7 all above plus discussion of cyberbullying, sexting, selfies, pornography, sexual consent, STIs, different types of sexual activities and possible outcomes, condoms and emergency contraceptive

Parents were given tips on sex talk and told not too use baby talk but to use proper terms. Parents were also told to take advantage of any teachable moments and to keep the conversation going.

Essentially, You can’t tell a child too much – anything that isn’t relevant, interesting or on their radar will just of over their heads. Sarah also provided a resource list of books, magazines and websites (sexual health for kids, teens and adults, empowerment and safety)

Upcoming events

Winter snow, Kent, England, UK

So you survived the first week back at school…and the second…nicely done. The snow is slowly melting and we may be able to see the playground at Ross Road very soon.

The Christmas fair is now a distant memory but we have some great news to share with you. Due to the commitment of parents and students alike we were able to raise $8,849 from the Christmas Fair. This is a fabulous amount and means that we can put the monies towards some educationally beneficial purchases for our kids to use in a school setting. Thank you to all that made this possible. We will be able to provide more details at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May  31st as to what the money may possibly be used for.

Next up….Kindergarten and grade 1 parents as our Special Events Hosts for the Staff Appreciation Lunch!!!

And grade 2 and 3 will be planning the Spring Carnival.

PAC NEWSLETTER – DEC 16, 2016

santas

Today is the last day of school before the holidays and it is a cold one out there.

Christmas Fair update

I think it is safe to say that everyone who attended the fair last week thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly loved the Dance Party! Also the crafts that the kids produced were amazing.

We are still waiting to finalize the monies and will relay the amount in the New Year.

A huge heart felt THANK YOU to our Special Events Christmas Fair Hosts in grade 4-5; Jess Howard, Mirjan Demmers, Cheryl Schreader, Shelley Clark, Jennifer Chiu, Nicky Owers. Also a huge THANK YOU to Suzanne Earle for leading the committee this year. Of course we can’t forget the parents who helped make the 11 amazing raffle baskets, signed up for 30 minute shifts on the night of the fair and the set up and cleanup crew. The school really appreciated the work done at the end of the night to put things back in order.

We should also send a big high five to the Ross Road kids who created some amazing little trinkets to be sold at the fair. Hopefully you are lucky enough to have some adorning your tree and/or home.

Mirjan Demmers was our onsite photographer and took many wonderful photos. I will be loading them onto social media at some point in the next week. If you have any pictures from the night please tag them #rossroadchristmasfair2016 on our Twitter and/or Facebook pages or even on Instagram (links below)

The fair would not have been a success had it not been for your dedication to making this a fabulous event so thank you again.

Other News

The card project this fall was a runaway success and raised $1,953.63 from Card Project orders.  We will be donating 25% of this to a charity. More on this to come soon.

Ross Road Christmas Fair This Friday

Unless you’ve been living under a candy cane for the last month, you probably know the Ross Road Christmas Craft Fair is nearly upon us. The school will be a bustle of activity and fun this Friday December 9th.

Thank you to everyone who has made gift donations for our activities – you’re terrific! However, we could still use a few more things — particularly Mystery Bags suitable for the older kids. Your help here will get Rudolph’s nose shining in appreciation.

Thank you also to everyone who has signed up to help run an activity during the fair. To those who will be volunteering their time on the night, kindly reference the map that will be posted in the school foyer to know where you need to be for your activity. If you haven’t had a chance to sign up yet to volunteer a half hour of your time, it’s not too late and Santa (and the kids) will thank you for it!

If you are bringing bake sale items, please deliver them directly to the gym on Friday morning or afternoon.

Finally, if you want to beat the line ups, tickets can be purchased in advance, from 8:30-9am and 2:30-3:15pm on Friday, from the school foyer. Tickets can also be bought amidst the chaos and fun of the fair itself, when you arrive that evening. Ticket sales during the fair will be in the Foyer and in the Gym.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Christmas Fair Update

The Ross Road Christmas Fair is fast approaching. The festivities will take place on Friday, December 9th, from 5-8pm. Come and get your kids hopped up on sugar and the Christmas spirit (and then head home, put them to bed, and enjoy some quieter Christmas cheer for yourself).

We have a variety of fun activities planned for the kids this year, but we need your help to make it all happen. We appreciate that your schedules are busy, especially at this time of year, but would be oh-so-thankful to all those who can donate a half hour of their time during the fair to make it a special evening for all the children. Santa will be watching, and this good deed might just be what some of us need to be moved from the naughty to the nice list this year.

Please visit the website below (no special registration required) and select a volunteer slot. New this year is the Storytime Room, intended for the younger children, which is a wonderful opportunity for a volunteer team effort from parents and their kids in grade 7.

PAC NEWSLETTER – NOV 18, 2016

Christmas Fair – December 9th

aaaaxmas-countdown

21 days to go

We hope you have your calendars marked for December 9th (5-8pm).  You will not want to miss the annual Ross Road Christmas Fair. Some very exciting activities are planned for this year. We need your help to make it happen!

All money raised at the Fair goes back to the kids in terms of new/special activities, events, equipment (sports, technology), etc. and other major items on teacher’s wish lists for improving the education and experience of our kids.

Plus, this is a great community event to kick off the Christmas season. Invite your friends and extended family – everyone is welcome.

We need three things from you:

Sign up for a volunteer shift! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0948a4a922a2f49-ross

If your class has not been assigned an activity, we still need your help. Please consider donating a half hour or your time on the night of the event. It’s so easy and a great way to meet other parents. (You do not need to register for sign-up genius to add your name to a volunteer time slot).

Donate! If your class has not been assigned a raffle basket to prepare for the fair, we still need your donations. Monetary donations directly to the Fair fundraising can still be given through your class reps.

Additional donations are required for the following:

Holiday Shop N Wrap: Kids only! Shop for gifts for friends and family. Please pitch in to donate small new or nearly-new items. Clear your closets of those candles, books and soaps that you thought you would use. Donate those DVDs that you have viewed and still look new. Socks, toys, bath products, art kits – all of these things will find good homes. It does not need to be brand new – just present-able. (Pun intended!) Drop off in foyer.

Mystery Bags: The children LOVE these fun bags. Bags should have an approximate value of $5 per bag, and everything in the bags should be NEW (please, No old candy or used toys). The bags could include fun holiday- or winter-themed things such as craft kits or supplies, ornaments to colour, kids’ costume jewellery or hair bands, fun kid’s gloves, small puzzles or games, candy boxes or bags, pencils, etc. The “bag” can be anything you like… brown lunch bag, goodie bag, gift bag – with the contents a mystery! All styles are welcome and fun! Please keep the bag unsealed and label the bag as boy, girl, or either, and the approximate grade level as appropriate. Drop off in foyer.

Bake Sale: Please sign-up in the school foyer. Drop off your cookies, brownies, squares, etc.  at the office on Friday December 9th. Where possible, please do not put nuts in your baking. Store bought “baking” is always welcome!

Come and Have Fun! This event would not be possible without you and your kids coming out to enjoy and have fun. Don’t forget to pre-order your meal on the Munch a Lunch Website- don’t be disappointed and hungry. www.munchalunch.com (under the fundraising tab) must be ordered before December 2nd.

And if you are willing to pitch in a bit more, in addition to the online sign-up, we are still looking to fill several volunteer positions as part of the Fair organizing committee. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the following please contact Suzanne Earle (suzanneearle77@gmail.com)

  • Disco Dance Party Activity Coordinator
  • First Aid Attendants at Fair (valid first aid certificate required)
  • Emcee to announce special activities and raffle basket winners
  • Craft helpers to help students crafts in the classroom to be sold at the fair

Questions about Holiday Shop N’ Wrap can be directed to Jess Howard (jessaitken@hotmail.com)

Questions about Mystery Bags can be directed to Jennifer Chiu (jen@winterpost.com) or Nicky Owers (nowers40@gmail.com)

Questions about Santa’s Craft Workshop rooms can be directed to Cheryl Schreader (cheryl@schreader.ca)

Questions about Bake N’ Snack table can be directed to Shelley Clark (scsmith00@hotmail.com)

Please direct other questions and general Christmas Fair questions to Suzanne Earle (suzanneearle77@gmail.com).

Thank you to everyone for your time, energy, and other contributions!
