Reminder: Teachers’ Coffee Chat, Tuesday April 17th

Want to know what some of the teachers at Ross Road think about the labour dispute?

Come to an informal gathering Tuesday, April 17th at Waves Coffee House from 3:15pm until …you run out of questions.

Get an insider’s perspective about the state of public education as seen through the eyes of those who spend their days with your children. You are welcome to attend whether you have been closely following the media coverage or just wish to become better informed on the issues. Several experienced teachers and staff will be on hand to explain their concerns. Find out why some teachers feel they are taking a stand to protect the quality of your child’s education.

Date: Tuesday, April 17th

Time: 3:15pm onwards

Place: Waves Coffee House (Mountain Hwy and Lynn Valley Road)

Bring the kids (and their homework) or take turns watching them at the school playground or library. We’ll be there for at least an hour, so feel free to drop in when you can.

Job Action

Dear Ross Road parents,

While job action is always difficult, as a Parent Group our mandate is to support students and teachers at our school. While we may or may not agree with teachers’ job action, we can see the effects of budget cuts over the last years. As a middle-of-the-road PAC, our resources are being stretched thinner and thinner as we try to provide the things (library books, art supplies, gym equipment and computers) that in the past were a part of the government’s budget for schools.

With this in mind, the Ross Road PAC is pleased to allow space on our website for Advocacy Ross Road* to present letters and links to articles about Job Action to help raise awareness and understanding of the issues, facts and impacts on public education in BC.

We would appreciate input and insight from all concerned parents and citizens.

Thank you,

Lost and Found Spring Cleaning!

Hello Ross Road parents!

Do you have a boy who wears clothing size 10 and up? Or a girl who is missing her favourite pair of jeans? Stop by the Lost and Found or have your child stop by and take look for your clothing!

  • A majority of the items are boys’ clothing, mostly hoodies.
  • There are 6 pairs of rubber boots, two pairs of girls’ runners, and a number of boys’ shorts.
  • Also there are jackets and rain gear, hats, mittens and shirts.

The Lost and Found is bursting at the seams and we will be forced to donate items to our local Salvation Army so please stop by and have a look!

The Lost and Found is located in the hall outside the music room. If your child attends a classroom in the Annex, there is also a lost in found box at the end of the hall.

Thanks,
Tanya Brown

How’d They Do That?

You may have noticed a large structure missing from the primary playground after Spring Break. Well – it’s true – the wooden playground is gone.  A large metal chainsaw was used to cut the steel poles and a tiny little bobcat demolished the rest. [Scroll down for photos]

After careful examination of the wood, we discovered that there was too much rot and depreciation to salvage any pieces for future projects in the Environment Club.   However, new wood was ordered and with the great skill and expertise of Jim Gorton, the new planter boxes have been installed for the ever growing Edible Garden.

Many thanks to the Environment Club, Laurie Ainsworth, Michele Fogal, and Lene Burgmann for their digging efforts, and of course, special mention to Jim Gorton for executing the project so quickly.  On April 18th the Grade 7 Quebec Exchange Students will continue the removal of the  bark mulch and lay the soil for planting.

As this is a work in progress over the next few weeks, we would ask that you please stay clear of the planter until all work is completed.  Do however, feel free to sneak a peak and feel the excitement growing!

Many thanks, Gillian Gorton
