Km Club 2012

Km Club 2012 – click on image for more photos!

Here’s to another successful running season!  Albeit many times under stormy skies, students and parents have shown commitment to a healthy lifestyle.  You are all to be commended.

Thank you to all the parents that made these morning runs possible, by handing out popsicle sticks, encouraging runners and tallying their distances.  A special thank you goes to Keith Nicol who lead us through the runs, Lynda Faivre-Duboz for her IT expertise in tallying our numbers, and Kevin Vallely for stepping in on a couple of occasions.

We hope to see many of you out there again next year!  Keep up your enthusiasm for running, we are certainly blessed with many running trails!

Safe Arrival Reminder

The Safe Arrival program aims to identify missing children in a timely manner. Even in the safest neighbourhoods, and at our school, a child has gone missing! When this happens, every second counts.

That’s why it is so important that parents/caregivers call the school’s Safe Arrival number (604-903-3755) regarding the absence or late arrival of students.

Each morning, office staff and volunteers check attendance against messages from parents/caregivers. When the lists don’t match, we have to interrupt the student’s class to determine their whereabouts. Checking classrooms for students who are simply late, on holiday or sick is time consuming. It disrupts the class and teaching/learning that is going on as well as increasing the amount of time it would take to identify a truly missing child.

Please help minimize disruptions and keep our children safe by:

  • Calling 604-903-3755 by 9:00am when your child is going to be late or absent,
  • Reporting holidays to the office & teacher (specify the first & last day of absence)
  • Ensuring your child signs in at the office when arriving late

When calling the Safe Arrival line, please be brief. The office has your contact information; unless you are going to be somewhere unusual, we don’t need your phone numbers. Here are four examples of what we record from the Safe Arrival line:

  1. Student Name: Jill Smith
    Teacher/Division: Mme. Yuen
Reason for Absence/Late Arrival: Sick – fever
    ————————————–
  2. Student Name: Les Brown
    Teacher/Division: E01
Reason for Absence/Late Arrival: Vacation – until April 15 (inclusive)
    ————————————–
  3. Student Name: John Jones
    Teacher/Division: F08
Reason for Absence/Late Arrival: Will be Late – recess (doctor)
    ————————————–
  4. Student Name: Kim Holmes
    Teacher/Division: Mr. Prentice
Reason for Absence/Late Arrival: Excused Absence – hockey

Thank you very much for your cooperation,
The Safe Arrival Team

A message from BCCPAC President regarding parent involvement in BC education system

Dear PAC and DPAC chairs and parents,

As we enter the final chapter of this school year, it is a time when the excitement of students and families grows, as preparation for celebrations of student accomplishments take shape and provide opportunity to reflect and share achievements and successes for the school year.

While plans for most of these celebrations and events have been made long ago, I am sad to share that recent discussions in an alarming number of our schools in this province are not positive ones. Members are reporting that the response to parent offers to volunteer to support their students and school community have been very discouraging, negative and multifaceted. Many events are being cancelled even when parents are stepping forward with time, skills and resources to successfully host the activity. Events (many deep in tradition) planned months in advance are being cancelled and deposits paid being lost due to these cancellations – citing policies, liability, special certifications etc.  as reasons why parents cannot volunteer in the absence of teachers.

As parents, the safety of our child is paramount, and we can all agree that activities must ensure the safety of our students.  BCCPAC has and continues to receive input from parents that indicates many barriers to parent engagement continue to exist in our schools both culturally and through restrictive policies and practises which are not guided by concern for student safety or a children first approach.

While the education system has the time and opportunity to recover from failure, individual students and parents do not have this opportunity. Parents have but one opportunity to raise their child and have an expectation that our school system will support each student fully by providing and allowing  access to all resources available to ensure the best possible opportunities for every student during their educational experience.

The failure to embrace and welcome parent volunteers in our school communities during the ongoing dispute between the BCTF and BCPSEA highlights the lack of progress our system has made in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and culture where parents feel valued for their ability to contribute to our school communities to support student success and healthy communities.

BCCPAC encourages parent leaders to engage their school communities and create opportunities to participate in informed dialogue on parent volunteerism in your school and district. By asking genuine questions on the issues that matter to your community, by identifying barriers which impede parent involvement while also identifying opportunities for increased parent and community engagement, together, we will create the conditions and learning environment that we desire for our children, for our employees, for our families and for our future society.

We encourage you to keep BCCPAC informed of your discussions as we continue our commitment to advocating for parent involvement in our BC education system.

Please forward your comments to memberviews@bccpac.bc.ca

A Big Wahoo Thank You for another successful Staff Appreciation Lunch!

A big round of applause to all of you that helped out with the Staff Appreciation Lunch.  Whether you donated a food item, a gift, or both, it went off without a hitch and we could not have done it without you.  The Teachers were so delighted and very much appreciated the support from the Parent Community.

Thank you to the fabulous set-up crew who turned the gym into a perfect rain shower for our “April Showers Bring May Flowers” theme, to Lynnmour Flowers and Grocery for the beautiful flower pots, to the playground supervision crew who put band-aids on children in the cold, to the squeaky clean dishwashing and clean-up crew and to all those who helped out in any way possible.  What a Team…Same Time Next Year!

All donated plates, platters and dishes have been washed and can be claimed in the front lobby of the school.

Quebec Exchange Community Service Project

Click image to view more photos!

On Wednesday, April 18th the Grade 7 Quebec Exchange Students, sponsored by YMCA / Heritage Canada, volunteered their time doing a Community Service Project for the Woodland Walk and Edible Garden.

It was a very busy day with 65 students working 4 hours which works out to 260 man hours of digging, painting and laughter.

What a Feat!  Amongst all of the workers we had a visit from Glen Kakoske from Jim Pattison Toyota North Shore and the Toyota Evergreen Foundation who generously presented a grant to the Environment Club in the amount of $2,880.  The Grant monies will go towards all materials needed to complete the Woodland Walk and Garden development.  Mike McGraw, a School Liaison Trustee was also in attendance for the hanging of the Edible Garden sign and to observe our progress. Click here to view photos of the event.

The enhancement of the Woodland Walk area will inevitably attract the attention of the students and encourage them to explore and observe the nature around them.

Thank you to all the Grade 7’s who worked so very hard to make their school a better place.

Earlier finish for Km Club

Km Club 2012 – Click image to view more photos!

Dear Km Club Parents and Runners:

The Km Club will finish a bit earlier this year due to the May 1st withdrawal of extra curricular activities.

Monday April 30th will be the last running day for this season.  If your child has been running regularly we will add twice their last distance run for the two lost days.  As such, ribbons and medals will not be affected.

We were delighted to see so many of you out there this year and look forward to another Km Club in 2013.
