Calling Ross Road Parents! PAC AGM next Wednesday, May 30, 7:30pm

Click image to view larger poster

What an amazing school year we have had at Ross Road! Our Christmas Craft Fair and Parent Night were all well attended and raised much needed funds for the Ross Road students and we’re feeling the buzz about the upcoming Spring Carnival!

As the 2011-12 school year winds down, it’s time for the Ross Road PAC’s Annual General Meeting:

  • Wednesday, May 30th at 7:30 PM at the school library
  • Coffee, tea and treats will be served
  • Babysitting available. Please send an email to either of our PAC co-chairs by 12:00pm on Wednesday to confirm a spot:
    – Lene Burgmann: leneburgmann@mac.com
    – Carolyn Sluis: rcsluis@shaw.ca

Consider getting involved! This year’s PAC Executive is an eclectic, fun-loving group of parents from many different backgrounds. We work as engineers, teachers and accountants, in public relations, administration and technology, as graphic designers and active family co-ordinators. We are on the PAC Executive because we enjoy being involved, we like to know what is going on at our child(ren)’s school, and we like being a part of the decision-making that goes on. Many of us are continuing next year, while others are moving on to other challenges.

For the 2012-2013 school year, we would like to welcome new parents and new ideas to the PAC Executive! We have a number of positions available for next year, big and small. While all of them require communication with the PAC Executive, not all of them require you to attend regular meetings. We meet once a month on a weekday evening.

For a complete list of available positions, please visit this page:
www.rossroadpac.ca/volunteer
Please check regularly as the page will be updated over the next few weeks!

  • Haven’t found your dream job on the PAC Executive yet, but would like to be involved? We’d love to have you join anyway!
  • Don’t want to be on the Executive, but would like to go to the AGM to be involved in grassroots democracy, connect with other Ross Road parents and enjoy delicious treats? You’re all invited!
  • Click here for the AGM Agenda.

Hope to see you there, Wednesday, May 30th at 7:30pm in the library!

Advocacy Ross Road meeting Tuesday, May 22nd – all parents welcome!

Are you interested in expressing your views about the effects of cuts on public education, or finding out more about what’s going on with the current Job Action? If so, there are two options next week:

  • TUESDAY, MAY 22nd – PARENT PLAYGROUND GATHERING
Next Tuesday a group of concerned parents will be meeting in the school playground at 2:30pm to discuss ways of advocating for high quality education for their children. Hope you can join us! Rain or shine – meet under the covered area by the primary swings if it’s wet!
  • THURSDAY, MAY 24th – JANE THORNTHWAITE FIRESIDE CHAT
Would you like your provincial representative to know your feelings about the labour dispute with the teachers? If so, visit MLA Jane Thornthwaite during her “fireside chat” at the Lynn Valley library on Thursday, May 24th. Drop in anytime from 10 to 11 am.

Click here to read more about the state of public education in BC. We are in the process of updating this section, which is partly why Tuesday’s playground meeting is taking place, so that we can come up with a strategy for keeping these pages informative, balanced and up-to-date.

If you can’t make it next Tuesday, but would like to share your comments, concerns or suggestions, please send an email to: advocacyrossroad@gmail.com

Thank you!

The Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) needs new members!

Ross Road School’s Emergency Supplies Container. Click image to read more about the EPC.

The Ross Road Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) is looking for parents to help or join us for the 2012-2013 school year. Along with school administration, the EPC helps to adapt, implement and update the school’s emergency program.

Here are some of the things that the EPC does:

  • Maintain familiarity with the school’s emergency response procedures.
  • Ensure all class ‘grab & go bags’ are properly stocked.
  • Update the emergency response procedures, including the designation of staff for response functions.
  • Update the student identification forms and student release forms.
  • Liaise with the PAC for appropriate funding.
  • Manage an inventory of ‘equipment & supplies list’ and replace resources as necessary. (ex. food rations, water, batteries etc.)
  • Organize and implement a program of drills and exercises, and supervise their conduct and evaluation as part of the school curriculum.
  • Maintain regular contact with parents through meetings and newsletters.

>> Please contact Barb Woznow at wozzy@shaw.ca for more information.

EMERGENCY RELEASE DRILL – FRIDAY, MAY 11

Speaking of emergency response procedures, don’t forget that this afternoon (Friday, May 11) Ross Road will be enacting a full Emergency Release Drill in conjunction with Emergency Preparedness Week. Parents or Emergency Release alternates are asked to pick up their students between 1:30pm – 2:45pm. Please bring ID.

Ross Road Spring Carnival 2012

Click image to view larger poster

Mark your calendars for this year’s Spring Carnival – Friday, June 1st, from 5:00-8:00pm!

Please join us for:  Games for kids of all ages  •  Pony Rides  •  Bouncy Castle •  Crafts  •  Bicycle Courses  •  Cake Walk  •  Mystery Bags  •  Crazy Hair  •  Live Band  •  Café (drinks, pizza, snacks)   •  Carnival treats (popcorn, cotton candy, smoothies)  • Silent Auction (items from 4Cats, Maplewood Farms, Pedalheads, inbloomkids & more!)

Our goal is to raise $6000.00 for the PAC and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Here’s how:

  • Sign up for a shift at your class station:  Check the sign-up sheets on your child(ren)’s classroom door or connect with your class rep to sign up for a half-hour shift.  It’s fun and easy and a great way to catch up with other parents! Click here for a list of stations & activities by class.
  • Cake Walk:  Please drop off a cake, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, or squares at the office anytime on Friday, June 1st. We will be awarding these treats at the VERY POPULAR cake walk.  Please, “nut free” if possible! Store-bought “baking” always welcome!
  • Mystery Bags:  The kids LOVE these and we are dependent on parent-donated mystery bags to make this very popular station a success. Please donate a couple of bags (or more!) so that every child who wants one has a chance to buy one.  Bags should have an approx. value of $5, contain only NEW items, and be labeled intermediate/primary and boy/girl, as appropriate – items not visible, it’s a mystery!  Suggestions include:  $5 gift cards (booster juice, DQ, pizza, Starbucks etc), candy, cool school supplies, hair accessories, funky pens, craft supplies, travel games, sunglasses, fun jewelry.  Bags can also be dropped off at the office anytime on Friday, June 1st.

Our carnival is entirely supported by volunteer help and donations, so please be generous with your time, your baking, and your mystery bags!

Thanks, in advance, for your participation, & hope to see you there!
