KM Club

Week three: In the middle of Friday’s run something weird happened at Kilometre Club. The kids got a strong whiff of a strange odor. It was Justin Trudeau’s aftershave. That could only mean one thing: they had reached Ottawa.

Truly, the Kilometre Clubbers are racking up heroic mileage. Almost 3500 km, now, and it’s only the end of week three! This week the kids — all 190 of ‘em — ran 1031 km. (F12 alone logged 104 km.) At this pace they will hit Nova Scotia by early May, dip a toe in the Atlantic, and turn around and head back.

Will they make it all the way home? That’ll depend on the numbers. And the speed.

No one is doubting the heart.

Week one and two updates available on last week’s post

UPDATES

KM Club

Families were out in full force again on Wednesday morning to run and walk.  Thankfully the rain took mercy on the KM club and stayed away this week.

Week Two Update: It rained this week. A lot. But the moral of Week Two of Kilometre Club was: Ross Road kids are made of stronger stuff. A hundred and seventy runners were out on the track, (including 49 intermediates!), racking up 949 kilometres between them. Madame Simon’s class alone logged 93 km. That’s almost here to Chilliwack. AND it was a short week. Imagine what these stallions will do with three full days, dry sneakers and the trees in full inspirational bloom.

Week One Update: Despite the rain, KM club runners left the starting blocks in good form. Two hundred and eleven students participated during the first week of the activity, including 150 intermediate students.  This year again, we will have intermediate prize draws based on participation.  An indigo and an Itunes gift card will be drawn each week. Stay tuned! Of the entire school, Mme Aiello’s class had the most participants with 17 students, while Mme. Simon’s class went the farthest: 155 km. Congratulations to everyone who started a new routine this week. Getting up earlier and out into the wet takes grit! A total of 1672 km were covered this week. At this pace, we are on course to surpass last year’s total of 9,888. Let’s go for 10,000 km this year!

The PAC received some great ideas in our SUGGESTION BOX at our February GM a few months ago – develop a ski school, celebrate Quebec carnival in school, set up a library of board games that the teachers can sign out, buy a class set of Makey, Makeys for electronic coding project, sinks in the portables, covered bike racks – and we’d love to hear more ideas on how to spend the funds you’ve raised for our school. Please email, rossroadpac@gmail.com, us your suggestions by May 8th for review and we’ll bring forward at our AGM on May 31st for your vote.

Km Club 2013 – Amazing participation this year!

Thank you again to all the parents that made these morning runs possible, by handing out popsicle sticks, encouraging runners and tallying their distances.  We had an amazing turn-out this year with some very committed runners, well done!

• Kindergarten/Grade 1 medals for 25 km
• Grades 2/3 for 50 km
• Grades 4 -7 for 75 km

Our first annual fundraiser for Jumpstart for kids was a great success. Together we raised $110!  Fantastic job Ross Road.

While the Km Club runs are over, we hope to see many of you on the trails or in your neighborhood enjoying some North Shore family runs!

All students, parents and siblings are invited to lace up their runners and participate in this event! It is a great opportunity to get prepared for the track and field season, increase your fitness level, challenge yourself to reach a certain KM goal, and to ensure your child is getting some DPA (daily physical activity).

  • Starting Wednesday, April 3rd, we will be running every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning before school for 20 minutes.
  • Warm up starts at 8:05 am sharp and running is from 8:10 am to 8:30 am on the field. Runners will receive a Popsicle stick for each lap completed around the school field. The number of sticks collected will in turn be recorded on class lists at the end of the run (3 Popsicle sticks represents 1 km). Students and siblings will be encouraged by getting ribbons for distances attained.

Here’s to another successful running season!  Albeit many times under stormy skies, students and parents have shown commitment to a healthy lifestyle.  You are all to be commended.

Thank you to all the parents that made these morning runs possible, by handing out popsicle sticks, encouraging runners and tallying their distances.  A special thank you goes to Keith Nicol who lead us through the runs, Lynda Faivre-Duboz for her IT expertise in tallying our numbers, and Kevin Vallely for stepping in on a couple of occasions.

We hope to see many of you out there again next year!  Keep up your enthusiasm for running, we are certainly blessed with many running trails!

Earlier finish for Km Club

Km Club 2012 – Click image to view more photos!

Dear Km Club Parents and Runners:

The Km Club will finish a bit earlier this year due to the May 1st withdrawal of extra curricular activities.

Monday April 30th will be the last running day for this season.  If your child has been running regularly we will add twice their last distance run for the two lost days.  As such, ribbons and medals will not be affected.

We were delighted to see so many of you out there this year and look forward to another Km Club in 2013.

— Km Club Organizing Committee

Km Club starts tomorrow! Volunteers needed!

KM Club 2011

The Km Club will start tomorrow, Wednesday March 28th, rain or shine, at 8:05am. All students, parents and siblings are invited to come and participate in this event. It is a great opportunity to increase your fitness level, challenge yourself to reach a certain Km goal, and to ensure your child is getting some DPA (daily physical activity).

We will be running every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 20 minutes from 8:05 (warm up for 5 minutes) to 8:35 on the field. Runners will receive popsicle sticks for each lap. The number of sticks collected will in turn be recorded on class lists at the end of the run (3 popsicle sticks represents 1 km). Students, and siblings will be encouraged by getting ribbons for distances attained. There will be 15 running days – Km Club 2012 ends Monday, May 7th.

Please consider volunteering (handing out popsicle sticks during the run, or tallying the distances at 8:30am) —  your involvement is key to running this club!
Just show up on whichever morning(s) you are able and let Keith or Angela know – they or another parent will show you how you can help out! It’s fun and easy!
