Sorry for the last minute reminder but Friday, May 13th is a Food Day! Subway sandwiches!
Immediate Assistance needed for Spring Carnival
Our Spring Carnival Event is in jeopardy. In the last couple of years we have tried to break the carnival duties down into small, manageable bits so that the burden of work is shared among many. A couple of our key organizers have had to excuse themselves from the organizing committee this year. They are tremendous supporters of the school and wonderful volunteers, but scheduling conflicts have left our committee short of a few important organizers.
Without someone stepping up to assist, we regrettably must let you know that the carnival may not happen this year. So, The PAC Executive and the Spring Carnival Committee are hoping some of you (at least 5 people) could offer your time over the next 4 weeks to make the carnival a reality.
We need people to assume the following roles:
- Dinner coordinator
- Café Coordinator
- Carnival Food (popcorn and cotton candy)
- Square Dance Coordinator (for demonstrations and lessons)
- Cake Walk
- Mystery Bags
- Band/Entertainment
- Games and Tournament Coordinator (basketball, tetherball, soccer)
- Pet Rock Painting Station
- Community involvement (BC Hydro, mascots)
- Climbing Wall
We do have the following events covered:
- Midway game selection and set up
- Crazy Hair
- Creativ Music
- Prizes
- Administration of the Committee
- First Aid
- 50/50
- ESC Bike Course
- Ticket Sales Coordination
- Bouncy Castle (to be confirmed)
Many of you have been extremely helpful in the past with PAC events. We realize many of you (and us) are suffering from volunteer fatigue and we are very understanding of this! REALLY! However, without an injection of parent energy into this event, we will need to cancel the carnival for this year.
This event usually earns the PAC (and therefore the school and children) about $6000 per year. It is a healthy part of our annual budget. Cancelling the event this year will impact the budget for the next school year. This would be reflected in our ability or inability to purchase items on the teacher’s wish list… things like a sound system for the gym, more computers, laptops, carts or smart boards.
If you can assist with any of the key roles mentioned above, please contact Jane Ince before SUNDAY NIGHT.
A notice regarding the fate of the carnival will be sent to all families on MONDAY MORNING.
Your emails should be sent to jane@jimediaconnections.com
Environment Club – Edible Garden
Dreams are the seeds of change. Nothing ever grows without a seed, and nothing ever changes without a dream.
—Debby Boone
Peas and beans and lettuce “Oh my!”
The Environment Club were busy this week planting seeds in their egg carton containers. With careful watering and lots of sunlight these seeds will soon be ready to plant outside in our gardening pots. Over the last few weeks of school the children will be able to reap the benefit of their soil and munch on some healthy vegetables. Thank you so much to the enthusiastic members of the Environment Club, Mrs. Hood and Layne Christensen for all of their hard work and knowledge. If all grows well – next year’s garden will be bigger and better and will flourish along with the children.

RR Km Club – last day Monday, May 16th
Congratulations to all our runners this year, it’s been an amazing turn-out. Sadly it is coming to an end with the last day being Monday, May 16th. As per last year, this will be a make-up day or just an additional day, so all are welcome.
Let’s finish it with a splash!

Litterless Lunch this week: May 9-13
The Student Council members have been telling Ross Road students about the Litterless Lunch campaign that they have been organizing for this week (May 9-13), but we thought we’d better advise the family lunch packers/food buyers as well!
Ask your child for more information about how to go garbage-free with their lunches!
Any experts out there?
Our Administrators have two large purchases to make in the next few months. Eileen Hood has asked to ask if we have any parents in our community who have expertise in the following areas and if they would want to share their knowledge with her as she investigates options for our school.
- Ross Road School will be purchasing a new sound system for the gym and for outdoor events. This system will be funded by the PAC. If you have knowledge about stereo/sounds systems and would like to help, please contact Eileen Hood by Tuesday May 10th to offer assistance.
- Eileen is creating a committee to offer guidance on future IT purchases of student computers. Again, this will be paid for in part from PAC funds. If you have any training, connections or knowledge in computer purchases and would like to join this committee, please contact Eileen by Friday May 13th to offer your help.
Yoga fundraiser update
The “Kindergarten Yoga Mat” fundraising yoga classes wrap up this evening. Thank you to all the yoga participants for coming to Justine’s classes and supporting the school! Justine hopes you have enjoyed the session and feel a little more relaxed and healthy.
Approximately $920 was raised and the school yoga mats are on their way! The PAC kindly kicked in the extra funds that were needed to get 66 mats – one non-toxic eco-friendly mat for each child in Kindergarten next year.
A big Thank You goes to Justine Simmons for organizing this fantastic feel-good fundraiser! Justine will be continuing the classes at Ross Road as she really liked the room! If you are interested, please contact her at:

Gardening help still needed!
The garden at the front of the school is looking lovely with its seasonal blooms, but is in need of a spring clean-up!
Susan Chalmers will be working on the front garden over the next few weeks every morning from drop-off (8:40 am) till kindergarten pick-up time (11:14 am) and is still looking for helpers! Even an hour of people’s time would be much appreciated.
Show up with a proper shovel, maybe a garden recycling bag or two, coffee and lots of cheer for a morning of fun and weeding!
Project Safety begins on Monday May 2nd. Are you ready?
Project Safety is a pilot project for the month of May offering a valet service in the drop-off zone at Ross Road. It will run from 8:30 am to 8:45 am, Monday to Friday. It is our hope that this program will help relieve the congestion in the drop-off zone (see map below) during the morning rush as well as ensure the roads in front of the school are safe for pedestrians and drivers.
To make Project Safety a success there are a few important points to remember:
- Look for the volunteers in the safety vests and follow their directions.
- Have your children ready to go (i.e. jackets on, backpacks with them, explain to them that you will not be getting out of the car)
- There is NO PARKING in the drop off zone.
- All drivers must remain in their cars.
- If you would like to walk your children to class, please park in the designated area on Ross Road or Kilkenny Road.
For more information about Project Safety, click here.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
