Welcome back, Ross Road!

Dear Ross Road Families!

It is indeed that time of year once again…  Whether you are wishing the summer would never end, or have been counting the days until the beginning of term, school starts up again on Tuesday, September 6th, 8:45-10:45 am.  For those of you who are returning to Ross Road once again, we hope you are returning refreshed and rejuvenated and, like many families are enjoying the hot debate as to which teacher your child/ren will get.  To those of you who are new to the school, we wish you a warm welcome and hope that you will get involved with the Ross Road parent association (PAC).  The Ross Road PAC is active in supporting the school community throughout the year.  We facilitate a variety of social and fundraising initiatives to foster a strong school community and support the kids’ needs.  Last year, for instance, the PAC was able to provide the school with $43,200.00 to purchase new IT equipment for the classrooms.  We also hosted a parent night where the grown ups enjoyed having the opportunity to hang out and get to know each other away from the schoolyard.  Please come and join our first PAC GM on October 26 and find out more about what we do…

ANNUAL FAMILY PHOTOS

Back by popular demand!  Family photo day will be Sunday, September 25th in the school gym.  This is a great chance to get some fun family photos which will be ready well in time for the holidays (these make great presents).  Keep an eye out for PAC emails with further details.

PAC GENERAL MEETING

This may sounds like a snooze fest, but this is your chance to come and find out what the PAC is up to, how the money you spend at school events is used to support your kids, and to get involved if you’d like.  The PAC facilitates a wide variety of social events and fundraisers.  Getting involved is a great way to get to know other parents and contribute to the school community.  There is lots that you can get involved with that doesn’t require a big time commitment (or a post graduate degree in maths).

Ross Road PAC: Year-end Summary

Hello Ross Road Parents,

As this year’s PAC Chair, I would like to share all the wonderful things our PAC has been doing during this school year.

But first here are a few details about your PAC and what to expect next year.

There is a PAC Executive committee who meet once a month to plan and discuss all school and PAC related business. This year’s group consists of Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications, Class Rep Coordinator, IT Coordinator, and Fundraising Coordinator.

All parents are welcome to join us at any of our meetings and be part of the Executive body. We also have three large meetings every year, one per term. Fall is our General Meeting, Winter is our second General Meeting and Spring is our Annual General Meeting. Our website has a lot of great information including an up-to-date calendar of all our meetings, events and activities. Our meeting minutes, budgets and PAC email posts are also found on our website. We encourage everyone to visit it often, rossroadpac.ca.

In order for the PAC Exec Committee to continue functioning next year there are two very important roles that urgently need to be filled: Co-Chair and Secretary. Without these two roles, the committee will be dissolved. Please consider joining us to carry on the wonderful work we do for our kids. In addition, we recognize the incredible value a Communications volunteer brings to the group. To ensure information is shared in a timely manner we need someone to manage our emails and social media messages (stay tuned for our new Facebook and Twitter accounts for next year). If you are interested in an opportunity to become more involved in this way, please email me at corbenst@telus.net.

Finally, next year we are launching our first ever assigned PAC Events to specific divisions. This idea first introduced at our February GM in response to increasing difficulty in finding volunteers to take the lead at which time parents were invited to give input. At our May AGM, the PAC formally decided to use next year as a trial run. For simplicity, we’ve used grades to indicate volunteer groupings, but in September we will adjust according to next year’s division list. The goal is of course to share volunteering, but also to encourage more integration between French and English families and build community. Class reps will facilitate the initial communication but will not be responsible for organising the event. We ask that you be open to this initiative and are happy to receive feedback.

As one proud parent to another, we do so much for our kids. Ross Road is a big part of their childhood and we all strive to make it a positive and rewarding experience.

I have the great privilege of helping with this alongside many other PAC volunteers. The money raised this year afforded us to spend $43,200.00 on IT, sports, playground  and music equipment which our kids will enjoy for next year.

Here is a quick snapshot of the past year:

SEPTEMBER

  • Welcome Back Coffee. PAC Executives put together coffee, tea and baked treats for all returning families on the first day of school.
  • Welcome Kindi Coffee. PAC Executive put together another coffee, tea and baked treats for all the kindergarten parents on the first full day of class.

OCTOBER

  • Food days begin. Kids and parents love this program and it’s our biggest fundraiser each year. Thus far, we have raised approximately $22,000. Our coordinators Wendy Ross and Kim Berg have been amazing at organizing this for years, but need to pass it along to another fabulous duo. Training and support is provided. Please let me know if you are interested.
  • The Card Project. This is also another favourite with students and families. With the support of the teachers, students create works of art and have them converted into beautiful greeting cards. Families choose to purchase sets with 25% of sales going to the PAC. This year we raised $1633.75 with a portion of the money being donated to North Shore Search and Rescue.
  • Family Photos. This annual event offers families a chance to have their family photos taken before the holidays. It is also another fundraiser and this year we raised $720.
  • PAC General Meeting. As our first GM, we invited one of the school trustees to speak on the Argyle Rebuild project. It was a very informative evening and spurred on good discussion.

NOVEMBER

  • Safe Teen workshop. With the generous donation from Polygon Homes, we were able to offer this amazing program to our grade 6 and 7 students. We also offered a parent information night the day before the workshop to parents who wanted to learn more about it.

DECEMBER

  • Christmas Fair. Jody Labriola stepped up to take on our traditional Christmas Fair event. It was smaller than usual, but with only three weeks of planning, it was a huge success raising $7,720.50.

JANUARY

  • Jesse Miller, Social Media Safety. The PAC has regularly been inviting Jesse Miller to speak to our children about internet safety and social media awareness. We also offered a parent night for parents to gain some insight and tools on how to support their children with their online activity.

FEBRUARY

  • PAC General Meeting. The PAC invited the Argyle Principal, PAC Chair and the school trustee to give an update on how the Argyle Rebuild project is going.

MARCH

  • Best ever Parent Night at Toby’s. Shan Bodie and Jacquie Stebbings organized a fabulous evening with good food, music, games and lots a fun hats. Although this event wasn’t intended as a fundraiser, it did raise $2,375.67. If you missed out, don’t worry because the party is on for next year.

APRIL

  • Tennis Club. The PAC rotates three themes every year, Sports, Science and Math, and Arts and Theatre. This year was our Sports theme and we decided to fund a three week tennis program for our kids. We’ve heard fantastic feedback on the instructor, and the school is considering having the program return next year.
  • Kilometre Club. This has been a Ross Road tradition for quite some time and with the help of the KM committee and funding from the PAC, we had a record year of participants and weather.
  • BrainSTEM demo night. This is an after school program offered at Ross Road for families who choose to pay for a five/six week session. It was a lot of fun building roller coasters and learning all about kinetic and static energy. Please contact Sarah Baldwin for more information about next year, sarah.baldwin@brainstemlearning.ca.
  • Two River Meats. New fundraising initiative that allowed families to purchase quality local meat in a convenient way. We raised $750.75. This is an ongoing fundraiser that families can continue to order year round. Just remember to mention Ross Road and the PAC will receive a portion of the sale.

MAY

  • Clothing Drive. Our first ever clothing drive. We collected about 120 bags and raised $240. This is an easy way to raise money, get rid of things you don’t want and donate items to charity. It’s a win, win, win all around!
  • Theater and Music performances. The PAC funded three performances this year: Tillers Folly, a trio band and Raven Meets the Monkey King, a play.
  • PAC Annual General Meeting. This was our final meeting of the year and unfortunately our lowest attendance. The PAC works hard to prepare for these meetings giving opportunities for parents to vote on how we spend our money and what they’d like to see in their school. It’s important the parent community try to attend these meetings to give feedback to the PAC Executives. Minutes and budget are posted on the website, on our Meetings page.
  • Bike to School Week. Jackie has been spear-heading this event for the last couple years and it’s been great. It’s wonderful to see how active our kids can be.

JUNE

  • Spring Carnival. Susan Neale coordinated this year’s carnival and did a fantastic event. We raised $7550 and had a lot of fun doing it. We’ve also received some great feedback on how we can make it even better. Thank you.
  • KidsWorld. This is our last fundraiser of the year. Another quick and easy way to contribute towards the PAC, but more importantly a fabulous way to spend the summer. The membership offers opportunity for parent and child to try a wide range of new experiences, and to see what types of activities they love but have not tried. You can see the calendar of summer events here and remember to use the code KIDS ROSS ROAD 2016 to earn money for our school.
  • Aboriginal dance troop. This year the PAC invited an aboriginal dance troop to perform for our kids in honour of Aboriginal Day and incorporate this amazing culture with our new curriculum.
  • End of Year Assembly. This year the PAC recognizes M. Ponton and the many years he has taught at our school. We also say goodbye to Carla Orr for her time as principal.
  • Grade 7 Farewell. As we do every year, we say good bye and good luck to all the grade 7 students and families who leave Ross Road. May your memories of Ross Road be ones to remember.

Cakes needed for Cake Walk! Homemade or store bought – cakes, brownies, cupcakes etc.  Please no nuts and if the cake may contain nuts please indicate that it does. Parents can drop the cakes/sweets off on the day of and leave them in the staff room or bring them to the Cake Walk game at the start of the carnival.

Raffle Baskets. There are nine $25 baskets.

  • Just like last year, kids get 1 popsicle stick for every station they do.
  • Once they get 3 popsicle sticks, they can trade them in for 1 raffle ticket at the ticket booth.
  • Make sure you fill in your name and phone number before dropping the raffle ticket for a basket.

Ross Road PAC: Bike to school week!

Dear parents – apologies if you’re getting this twice.  Technology is confusing.
Bike to School Week is next week, May 30th – June 3rd.
Students are encouraged to bike to school each day.  There will be daily draw prizes for students who participate.  Live too far away?  Try biking 1/2 way to school.  Or try any form of active transportation: walk, skateboard, scooter . . .
The primary and intermediate classes with the most bikers over the week will win a pizza party for their class.  There will also be a pizza party for the class with the best overall active transportation!

Ross Road PAC: Ross Road AGM Wednesday!

It’s an AGM overload!  The last email was about the District PAC AGM.  This one’s about the Ross Road AGM.  We understand that too many AGMs can be hazardous to one’s health, so if you’re only going to do one AGM this year, please make it Ross Road’s.  It’s in the library at 7pm tomorrow night!  (Wednesday, May 25).   Here’s what’s happening;

Ross Road PAC: NORTH VAN PAC AGM

Dear parents,

The North Van PAC AGM will be held next WEDNESDAY MAY 25, 2016 at 7 pm at the Education Services Centre, 2121 Lonsdale, 5th floor. Here’s what it’s all about…

Come out to hear about the NEW Societies Act and how the changes will affect your PAC (i.e. constitution and bylaw changes, etc)! We are bringing in Bryan Millman of the Bull Housser Law Firm and he will be doing a presentation and Q&A.

The Annual General Meeting will follow (around 8:15 pm)

One of the purposes of the Annual General Meeting is to elect a new Executive for the 2016/17 school year. All Executive positions are up for election each year. NVPAC encourages ALL parents who are interested in issues at the District level to consider joining the Executive. The time commitment varies with the particular role taken on, but at minimum, NVPAC Executive members are expected to attend one Executive meeting and one General Membership meeting per month. There are no General Membership meetings held in September, December, March or June.

Part IV: Duties of Executive Members

Each Executive member shall:

  • Submit an annual report;
  • Consult with, take direction from, and represent all PACs in the District;
  • Work as a team to ensure NVPAC purposes are achieved;
  • Where practical, assist their successor with the transition.

All Executive members are expected to:

  • Attend all Executive, General, and Special meetings;
  • Be familiar with the Constitution, Bylaws, Policies and Procedures of NVPAC;
  • Carry out their duties as described;
  • Follow the DPAC Code of Ethics, as per current policy;
  • Inform the Secretary prior to the meeting, if they are unable to attend.

The Chair shall:

  • Speak on behalf of the Society;
  • Act as designate to other Partner groups;
  • Consult with Society members;
  • Preside at membership and executive meetings;
  • Ensure that an agenda is prepared;
  • Appoint committees where authorised by the membership or Executive;
  • Ensure that the Society is represented in school district activities;
  • Ensure that Society activities are aimed at achieving the purposes set out in the constitution;
  • Be a signing officer.

The Vice-Chair shall:

  • Support the Chair;
  • Assume the duties of the Chair in the Chair’s absence or upon request;
  • Assist the Chair in the performance of his duties;
  • Accept extra duties as required.

The Treasurer shall:

  • Ensure all funds are accounted for;
  • Receive all monies and account for all expenditures to the membership as required;
  • Be a signing officer
  • Disburse funds as authorised by the membership or executive;
  • Report on all receipts and disbursements at general and executive meetings;
  • Make financial records and books of account available to members upon request, with reasonable notice;
  • With the assistance of the executive, draft an annual budget;
  • Ensure that another signing officer has access to the financial records and books of account in the treasurer’s absence;
  • Submit annual financial statements at the Annual General Meeting.

The Secretary shall:

  • Conduct the correspondence of the Society under the direction of the Chair and the Executive;
  • Issue notices of all meetings;
  • Be responsible for distribution to members any material approved by the Executive;
  • Record and file all minutes of all meetings.

The Registrar of Members shall:

  • Maintain annually a list of Executive members and voting members with telephone numbers, email addresses and the school they represent;
  • Keep an accurate record of PAC Representatives from each school;

The Communications Coordinator shall:

  • Administer the communications tools currently in use to ensure ongoing operation in support of the NVPAC communication needs.

The Program Facilitator shall:

  • Be responsible for the execution of all general parent meetings and educational forums planned by the Chair and the Executive.

The BCCPAC Representative shall:

  • Serve as the liaison between the Society and the British Columbia Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils;
  • Encourage PACs in School District #44 to be members of BCCPAC;
  • Disseminate BCCPAC information to all PACs in School District 44;
  • Help identify interested and qualified parents for BCCPAC external committees;
  • Help PACs and the Executive to process BCCPAC forms, proxies and applications;
  • Assist PACs and the Executive in responding to BCCPAC AGM resolutions;

The Members-at-Large shall:

  • Be responsible for duties assigned by the Executive.

We hope to have at least one representative (either PAC Chair or DPAC Rep) from each school in attendance for both the presentation and our AGM.

Ross Road PAC: BrainSTEM

After a successful demo a few weeks ago, BrainSTEM is offering a 5 week session starting on Wednesday May 25th.

BrainSTEM Learning Canada Corp. is an extracurricular education provider focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) systems.  Unique programs are designed by working engineers for learners aged 4 to 14. Through fun, creative, and innovative science experimentation students explore their creativity. By planning, building, testing, and modifying their design, reengineering the process expands their working knowledge of the world around them. BrainSTEM holds camps (summer, spring, winter, pro-d day), 6 week workshops (daytime, after school, evening, weekends), and events (birthday parties). First option is for the 5-6 year olds: 1 hr class 6 weeks ($135/student) called an Introduction to Robotics class:

The Robotics is the science or study of the technology associated with the design, fabrication, programming, and application of robots. Robots are exciting for the little kids. They always are curious to know how they work, how they are designed and how they may be used.

A robotics engineer is responsible for design, creating, and programming robots. Robotic systems that are able to perform duties that humans are either unable or prefer not to complete. Robots help to make jobs safer, easier, and more efficient, particularly in the manufacturing industry.

The little brains will discover what is behind a robot, a number of possible designs, the materials, what software is, and the programming using the LEGO® WeDo materials. Computers will also be used to built their robotic animals and toys. This will be under the guidance of our leaders and assistants under the STEM education programs,

Second option is for 7-12 year olds: Aerospace Astronautical Engineering class is as follow: 1.5 hr classes 6 weeks $160/student

The aerospace industry is one of the most fascinated things for children. Since we were kids we have been figuring out a way to reach the sky, designing wings, machines, and devices that help us with this.

Aerospace engineering involves the design and construction of planes and space shuttles. Aeronautical engineering covers crafts that stay inside the Earth’s atmosphere (such as commercial planes) while astronautical engineering covers craft that leave the Earth’s atmosphere (theory and practice of navigation beyond Earth’s atmosphere, such as space shuttles)

In this program the specialist and managers will learn about the fundamentals of astronautical industry discovering about aerodynamics; gravity; velocity; acceleration; forces to lift, drag and thrust objects; aerodynamics like Bernoulli principle; and space environment characteristics. They will use math to improve their results; will discover about the importance of the materials in this engineering branch; and use his or her creativity and curiosity to design, build and test their own prototypes at the same time they have fun.

Ross Road PAC: KM CLUB IS DONE!!!!

Dear parents,
