Km Club starts tomorrow! Volunteers needed!

KM Club 2011

The Km Club will start tomorrow, Wednesday March 28th, rain or shine, at 8:05am. All students, parents and siblings are invited to come and participate in this event. It is a great opportunity to increase your fitness level, challenge yourself to reach a certain Km goal, and to ensure your child is getting some DPA (daily physical activity).

We will be running every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 20 minutes from 8:05 (warm up for 5 minutes) to 8:35 on the field. Runners will receive popsicle sticks for each lap. The number of sticks collected will in turn be recorded on class lists at the end of the run (3 popsicle sticks represents 1 km). Students, and siblings will be encouraged by getting ribbons for distances attained. There will be 15 running days – Km Club 2012 ends Monday, May 7th.

Please consider volunteering (handing out popsicle sticks during the run, or tallying the distances at 8:30am) —  your involvement is key to running this club!
Just show up on whichever morning(s) you are able and let Keith or Angela know – they or another parent will show you how you can help out! It’s fun and easy!

We look forward to seeing many of you out there, rain or shine :)

IT Cheque-Writing Campaign Update

Well done, Ross Road! We raised $10,580 in our recent IT Cheque-Writing campaign!

Thank you very much to everyone who participated for your generous contributions! Large or small – we appreciate every single donation made!

The IT Committee has consulted with the teachers, the administrators and the PAC Executive Committee and has decided to purchase 20 iPad2s with the funds raised. The total cost of this purchase (including storage, power bars, charging hubs and Apple Care) is $12,700. The additional $2,120 needed will come from the funds raised at the Parent Night in November 2011 (ear-marked for the IT purchase). The teachers are keen to start using the iPads and are looking forward to putting them into the hands of Ross Road students right after Spring Break!

Why did we choose to buy iPads and not laptops? First of all, we didn’t raise enough money to purchase the 10 laptops. Secondly, the iPads will give us more ‘bang for our buck’ — more equipment will be put in the hands of the students with practically the same functionality as the laptops. The ipad2’s give us the added benefits of a camera. They are also less expensive and easier to maintain. Thirdly, the teachers have expresses a real interest in exploring the educational applications available to iPad users.

Forgot to donate? No problem! The iPad2s are sold to the school district in 10-packs, so when prices start going down on the iPad2s after the introduction of the iPad3’s, we hope to purchase another 10-pack for the 2012/13 school year. We will accept contributions on a continual basis and the money donated will be ear-marked towards future IT purchases only. Click here to download a donation form.

Once again, thank you very much for your participation in this campaign!

Ross Road PAC Sponsorship Child Update

Over the last few years the Ross Road PAC has sponsored 2 children overseas through organizations that assist in a child’s educational needs and community projects that improve infrastructure.

The first of these students was a young man sponsored through the Trans-Himalayan Aid Society in Nepal. He is now 18 years old and therefore ‘graduated’ from this program. He was able to successfully complete his schooling and thanked our school for the kind help he received.

The other student we continue to sponsor is a young lady in her final year of a program through Plan Haiti. The sponsorship she receives assists in projects that give scholarships for school children, provides furniture and equipment for schools, gives support in the formation and strengthening of children and youth organizations, as well as, raising awareness of hygiene, sanitation and the use of water. There is an information sheet on our PAC bulletin board in the school foyer if you would like to learn more about this particular sponsored child and the community in which she lives, or click here to link to our Child Sponsorship web page.

Linking our children to the needs and awareness of the global community remains a goal of this PAC initiative. As both of our sponsored children have either completed their program or will be in the final year of their schooling, we will be looking at other opportunities to offer sponsorship this spring. We welcome your input.

Well done, Ross Road School Community!

“In Stitches” Knitting Club update

Just a reminder to In Stitches Club members to bring their knitting to Friday’s meeting (12:20pm in the school library).

If you do not wish to continue, please return your needles tomorrow at lunch in the library. These needles have been lent to the school for the club and we would like to return them. Thanks for trying, hopefully we’ll see you in the next session!
