Bike to School Week Coordinators are still needed!

We have only one volunteer but we need more! Without forming a committee Bike to School week won’t happen at our school this year.

To all those big biking families we see at Ross Road – can you help out? Our one volunteer can’t do it alone.

This is a big community building role and Ross Road kids LOVE bike to school week, we are listed on the HUB website as one of the Top Trips.

There are a ton of resources and prizes that we won last year, this role is not a fresh start! As this will be a committee event, the work is spread out and you can make it anything you want it to be.

In the past there has been an opening morning with a group of parents who are keen to attend and set up fun stations and hand out prizes.  The other task is to sign up with HUB and organize teachers to track bike rides each day and had in the tally sheets at the end of the week. The bike rides to school are totalled and submitted to HUB.

We have all the form templates that can be reused and informational emails.

To volunteer to help make this event happen and find out more contact the PAC at rossroadpac@gmail.com

LGBTQ
LGBTQ+ 101 for Parents Wednesday, February 19th, 2020
at the Education Services Centre (2121 Lonsdale) 5th floor

RSVP HERE

In this era of internet and social media, children are not growing up in the same world that we adults did. This new access to diverse voices has increased awareness for young people, who are now exploring their identities earlier and earlier, including their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). Currently, 19% of BC high school students identify as not exclusively heterosexual. This number of queer and/or questioning students may surprise older generations, but our awareness is a key aspect in creating safety.

Queer youth are at far greater risk for depression, addiction, violence and suicide. Research shows that positive and affirming home and school experiences are highly influential in youth resilience. We work to provide tools for parents to enable them to feel confident in their ability to support our kids, our kids’ friends and our friends’ kids. A diverse and inclusive environment enables all young people to thrive and experience a genuine sense of belonging.

101 Topics

• How this impacts every parent and child

• Overview of current status for youth

• LGBTQ+ language and diverse perspective

• Gender identity, orientation, pronouns

• Privilege and bias

LGBTQ+ 201 for Parents Wednesday is on April 8th, 2020

Ross Road Winter Fair!!

The Ross Road Winter Fair is right around the corner!  Mark your calendars for December 12th (5-8pm).  You will not want to miss the annual Ross Road Winter Fair.  Some very exciting activities are planned for this year.  We need your help to make it happen!

All money raised at the Fair goes back to the kids in terms of new/special activities, events, equipment and other major items on teacher’s wish lists for improving education and experience of our kids.

You should have already received an email from your class rep asking for a $5-10 donation.  This will help us put together some great raffle baskets and the ever-popular mystery cards for the kids.

Additional donations required for the following:

Holiday Shop N Wrap: Kids only! Shop for gifts for friends and family.  Please pitch in to donate small new or nearly-new items.  Clear your closets of those candles, books and soaps that you thought you would use.  Socks, toys, bath products, art kits-all of these things will find good homes.  It does not need to be brand new- just present-able.  Drop off in the foyer.

Wine:  We hoping to put together a couple of wine baskets for the raffle.  If you have a spare bottle to donate, please drop off at the office.

Bake Sale:  Plan to make some great seasonal goodies for the bake sale.  Donations to be dropped off the day of the fair.

Raffle Baskets:  If you have any items or services you can donate to the raffle baskets please let us know!!!  (hmlepp@yahoo.com)

Bike to School Week Coordinator still needed!

Without a PAC coordinator Bike to School week won’t happen at our school next year.

We were lucky to have Jackie Hicks in this role for several years but she has had to step down and we need someone to take this on for next year.  There are a ton of resources and prizes that we won last year, so it is not a fresh start.

Unfortunately it will be too late now this year to get Escape adventures or sign up for Velodrome field trips, but there are still lots of other options.  Typically there is an opening morning with a group of parents who are keen to attend and set up fun stations and hand out prizes.  The other big component is to sign up with HUB (which only takes 2 minutes) and then to organize teachers to track bike rides each day and had in the tally sheets at the end of the week. The leader will need to total the bike rides to school and submit to HUB and we have all the form templates that can be reused and informational emails.
