Here is the schedule of after school programs for the Spring term at Ross Road School. Many new classes have been added. These classes have all been organized and coordinated by our school PAC.

MONDAYS

Bricks4Kidz

Grades K-5

April 6 – June 15 (8 weeks; no classes April 13, May 4 and May 18th).  *Please note start date*

Program Description: Our 75-minute class explores S.T.E.M based theme, all using LEGO Technic bricks and motors.  Students participating in this 10-week series will explore themes relating to the world around them.  We provide an engaging class where children are given the space to work together to explore STEM concepts hands-on.  Classes are suitable for Grades K-5.  Each LEGO model is adapted to the aptitude and age of the students.

TUESDAYS

Saplings Outdoor Program

Grades K-5

March 31 – June 16 (12 sessions)

Program Description:  Our after-school programs allow kids to explore and experience the natural world through practical involvement. We believe the outdoors encourages imaginative play, creativity, hand-eye coordination, physical strength, and mental clarity. Our educators encourage  children to develop their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Additionally, a multi-age environment promotes cooperation and teamwork, while raising children’s emotional awareness.

WEDNESDAYS

Mad Science

Grades K-7

April 1 – June 17 (12 sessions)

We make it our mission to spark imaginative learning! As a leading science enrichment provider for children in Grades K-7, Mad Science aspires to deliver unique, hands-on science experiences to as many children as possible.

The “Crazy Chem Works” program offers eight weeks of exciting hands-on science-based activities. Watch fascinating demonstrations, join in enquiry-based discussions, participate in individual and group experiments, and make amazing take-homes. Mad Science will spark the curiosity and imagination of children with fun science activities that will help them understand the world around them.  Some of the things the students will experience:

LAB WORKS Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Learn to manipulate laboratory equipment at your personal lab bench.

JUNIOR REACTORS Create a tiny world of atoms and learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results!

pH PHACTOR Slide down the colorful pH scale and dip into the world of acids and bases, while exploring the pH extremes. It is a sure-to-be a ‘popping’ experience!

CHEM IN A FLASH Hop on board the chemistry express for a high-speed science experience! Perform instantaneous experiments in this fast-paced class on split-second reactions that go like mad!

THE GLOW SHOW Discover amazing things that glow bright in the dark and come to light! Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology!

SUPER STICKY STUFF Stick it to the walls, and push the power of tape to the limits in this adhesive hour on things that cling!

DRY ICE CAPADES Manipulate matter in all of its three states! Melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice!

Lights Up Musical Theatre

Grades K-7

Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools provides singing, dancing and acting classes for children and teens across the lower mainland.

Musical theatre can enrich your child’s life in many ways. Skills built through performing arts include greater confidence, improved literacy and increased creativity. Performing arts also helps with expressing emotions, communicating ideas and working with others.

This Spring, your child can experience the joys and benefits of musical theatre by taking part in our afterschool programs led by our talented and experienced Lights Up Musical Theatre Schools staff.

Spring Show Theme: You’re In the Band!

Are you ready to rock?! This term we will explore pop and rock music from Broadway and beyond in our musical about a group of kids who just want to rock! Inspired by Footloose and School of Rock this will be a great chance to have some fun and sing and shout for performers of all ages! Performance for parents on the last day of classes.

Winter After School Programs

MONDAYS

Chess Club with National Chess Master Luc Poitras (also with the North Shore Chess Club)

Grades 1-5

January 13 – March 9 (8 weeks; no class Feb 17th)

3:10-4:15pm in Ross Road School – Music Room

$65.00

Program Description: What to expect from the chess club ? The chess club gives an opportunity to kids to play chess against other kids under the supervision from one or two instructors. Group lessons are given through an electronic screen. Beginner and more advanced players get lessons according to their level of understanding. Puzzles are weekly given to each student tailor on their skill.

Kids play chess and learn the basic rules and strategies with the help of a National Chess Master.

Kids will learn by playing, watching friendly kids chess videos and solving puzzles on chess devices.

Beginner and experienced players are welcome.

Maximum 20 participants.

First Nations Art with Gordon Dick

Program Description:  Join Gordon Dick from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation to learn basic Coast Salish shapes, find out about spirit animals and create your own indigenous animal.

Mad Science

Grades K-7

We make it our mission to spark imaginative learning! As a leading science enrichment provider for children in Grades K-7, Mad Science aspires to deliver unique, hands-on science experiences to as many children as possible.

The “System 3” program offers nine weeks of exciting hands-on science-based activities. Watch fascinating demonstrations, join in enquiry-based discussions, participate in individual & group experiments, and make amazing take-homes.  Some of the things the students will experience:

UNDER PRESSURE:  Join Bernoulli and Newton as we take this exciting look at the science behind aerodynamics and the properties of air … under pressure. Use a vortex generator to create air pockets with a punch and levitate ping-pong balls in defiance of gravity.

FUNDAMENTAL FORCES:  Gravity … Inertia … Centripetal Force … who could ever imagine that an introduction to physics could be so much fun? We’ll experience these awesome forces for ourselves and build some cool devices to watch them at work!

SCIENCE OF MAGIC:  Magic? Nope … It’s science! You’ll learn the secrets behind famous magic tricks that you can recreate for yourself! Mother nature has some tricks of her own, and we’d like to show you what’s up her sleeve!

STUNT PLANES & GLIDERS:  The Wright Brothers would be proud as we follow in their footsteps and learn the fundamental principles of flight. Build a “football” glider, and then make your very own Mad Science Glider… You’ll be a Top Gun after this class!

SUPER STRUCTURES: Discover the strengths of triangles, cylinders and arches. Learn how combinations of these shapes make for sturdy homes and skyscrapers! Use teamwork to build your own super structures as well as an earthquake-proof building!

Performance for parents on the last day of classes.

Our purpose is to encourage and develop fundamental basketball skills in a positive learning team environment. 3Pointbasketball was established in 2014 and is now participating in 9 schools across the North Shore. Our program is designed for the primary grade levels.

Registered students receive: 3PB t-shirt, basketball, and a healthy smoothie.

Program Description:  In the Robotics programming kids turn their LEGO creation into a robot, program it to do exactly what you tell it to do. This program offers all the fun of building with LEGO Bricks, plus the challenge of computer programming! The kids will use drag-and-drop, icon-based software; the WeDo software provides an introduction to the world of computer programming and robotics that will equip children to succeed in a technology-based marketplace.

Yoga with Erin Bjornson

Grades 2-7

Program Description: Come for a fun and relaxing class of kids yoga! Learn how to move your body in sun salutations, hold poses like tree pose, and relax in breath work and savasana.

Studio Art Perspectives – North Vancouver Perspectives

Grades 3-7

April 10 – June 12 (10 sessions)

(Class will run from 2:00-4:00 for early dismissal day on May 29, 2019)

Program Description: Through painting, drawing and mixed media, artists will learn about studio-based arts practices and techniques. Together students will be encouraged to express themselves and learn about art making as a process through exploration of line, shape, texture, colour, value, space and form. A Canadian perspective, with a focus on the culture and history of North Vancouver, will be emphasized.

Program Description: Let’s raise a generation of girls who are mentally happy and healthy, who know it’s okay to be strong and soft at the same time, who know how to deal with adversity, and who are totally in-tune with their unique awesome-ness.

At Girls with Grit, we use movement to show how strong our bodies are, mindful meditation (aka #braintrain) to show how strong our spirits are, and awesome crafts to show how strong our creative sparks are. We also talk about real topics like friendships, stress, pressure, stereotypes, technology, compassion, empathy and what being an awesome girl is really all about. Oh yeah – we also laugh alot!
