New BrainStem Classes!
BRAINSTEM: LITTLE BRAINS – CIVIL ENGINEERING (6 WEEK SERIES)
(K – 1 boys & girls, maximum 12 students)
Dates: Mondays 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the music room JAN. 15, 22, 29, FEB. 5, 19, 26 (NO CLASSES FEB 12)
Cost: $135 + GST for 6 x 1 hour sessions
Civil engineering includes the design and construction of buildings, roads, bridges, and dams. It is one of the oldest forms of engineering. Knowledge about materials, designs, and construction process allows us to explain the construction of such world wonders as the pyramids of Egypt.
They will find a way to put all his or her creativity into building skyscrapers, castles, shelters, bridges, and roads. During this process, they find answers to some questions about: how to resist movement before falling, how big may I build it, and how much weight it resists. The little brains will learn about forces, materials, structural design, foundations and more. At the same time, they will learn concepts of designing, building, and testing his or her castles, bridges, houses, and roads. All the while using his or her creativity, curiosity and STEM methodology.
BRAINSTEM: SPECIALISTS/MANAGERS: ROBOTICS ENGINEERING LEVEL 2 (6 WEEK SERIES)
(Grade 2-7 boys & girls)
Dates: Mondays 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the music room JAN. 15, 22, 29, FEB. 5, 19, 26 (NO CLASSES FEB 12)
Cost: $180+ GST for 6 x 1.5 hr sessions
A robotics engineer is responsible for designing, creating, and programming robots. Robotic systems are able to perform duties that humans are either unable or prefer not to complete. They help make jobs safer, easier, and more efficient, particularly in the manufacturing industry.
The specialist and managers will reinforce their robotic concepts from the Level 1 course. They will work with the sensor and advanced programming to face a variety of challenge mixing mechanical design and programming design to solve problems. The LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 TRIBOT Model materials and the software are also used in this course. The children will face different challenges having fun utilizing the STEM education model.

Software Engineering relates to our daily activities. As well, as word processing, data collection, and accounting, computers have many functions. Computers need someone to tell them what and how to do things that make our lives better. One may program and control ones’ robot to do many tasks that would be dangerous for humans to perform because the environment is unsafe, (space, underwater under extreme pressures, high in the atmosphere). Planes are often controlled by autopilots, which control the trajectory and speed of transportation Airliners.
Software engineering uses science, technology and Math to process raw information and commands into a language that computer and machines use to perform tasks that we want. Software Engineering can lead to the discovery of important new ways to assist humans and processes useful for other engineering disciplines or just to make our lives easier.
The Little Brains will learn about coding programs: beginners’ readers, internet safety, sequences, loops, and problem-solving concepts using his or her creativity and curiosity under the STEM methodology.

(Grade 2-7 boys & girls)
Dates: Thursdays 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the music room JAN 18, 25, FEB. 1, 8, 15, 22
Cost: $180.00 + GST for 6 x 1.5 hr sessions
In the future, many kids may work in this in and around the world’s waterways, so in this lesson, they will have the opportunity to learn how marine devices work. The oceans are particularly important the health of the world and provides half of the worlds oxygen supply from marine plants and algae. Oceans are an important way of transporting goods and people around the globe. Kids will use his or her creativity discovering an important balance of marine ecology, conservation, recreational water use, and how to transport using the Ocean.
The Marine engineer organizes people, places, equipment, and information. They ensure that work areas operate safely and efficiently. They are always looking to continually improve our recreational or professional lives.
The specialist and managers will understand how they can use the STEM model to improve how they can develop new technologies in a safe and productive way. They will design, build, test and improve different marine transportation devices using their creativity and having fun.
- If your child has previously been enrolled in a BrainSTEM program, you do NOT need to fill out the online registration form again (they already have all your information). Please just call 604-379-2767 or email email@example.com to say you want to enroll in the program (include subject line “Ross Road After School Program”, and parent’s name, student name, student’s current age, Monday or Thursday program day and start date in the body of the email).
- If your child has NOT previously been enrolled in a BrainSTEM program, please go to their website (http://www.brainstemlearning.ca/contact/registration/) and click “register online” at the bottom of the page. Choose Ross Road Elementary as location, JAN. 15 or JAN 18 as a start date, and Workshop as program type – after form is submitted, Sarah Baldwin will invoice parents for payment by online using a credit card or e-transfer to confirm registration.
