Dear ____________ (e.g. Honourable George Abbott),

I am writing to you as a parent of two children at Ross Road Elementary School in North Vancouver.

I am deeply concerned about the state of the Provincial Government’s funding for public schools. This year has seen deep cuts in funding for our school library as well as cuts to funding for our Special Education Assistants (SEAs). Whereas the North Vancouver School District used to fund the purchase of new computers, they have now ceased to do so. As a consequence, the Ross Road School PAC is now forced to purchase not only computers, but also library books, gym equipment and other core items that were previously funded by the government.

Larger class sizes, more combined classes and the lack of adequate support for children with additional needs are all matters which further erode the quality of public education, as a large body of research clearly concludes.

I would urge you to reconsider the funding model for public education! It is not enough to statically preserve the funding amount, when inflation and the real costs of education are rising. In order to preserve the quality of public education in our province, we need to reinstate the annual facilities grant funding and, in general, base the funding of individual schools on the real cost of quality education. If the government would commit to long-term stable funding of the public school system, the teachers and administrators would be able to focus on what they do best, teach and administer our schools.

Preserving the quality of public education is a chance for politicians to preserve and protect a legacy of commitment to the province of British Columbia and its children, not to mention its future economic and financial prosperity. Surely we want the best educated young adults to continue to reside, work, contribute and pay taxes in the ‘best place on earth’ once they are out of school, don’t we?

I would like to be kept updated on the developments in this matter.

Thank you for your time and attention to my concerns,

Yours truly,
